Kapla -- a simple toy with endless possibilities
Kapla blocks were invented about 25 years ago by a Dutch guy called Tom van der Bruggen. Tom had bought a ruined farm in a beautiful area in France, not too far from our house there so I know it quite well. Tom started to renovate the farm, and he was using wooden building blocks ...

Bajo toys, from Poland
I picked up this wooden ballerina for Ava's room in Antwerp last week (in a really cool eco store called Rewind). It's really pretty and well made, by a Polish company called Bajo which I hadn't heard of before. Established 20 years ago by Wojciech Bajor, an architect and set designer, Bajo is a small family run ...

London-Themed Toys from Alex & Alexa
I'm always a sucker for wooden toys in iconic London designs. I'm not sure if it's because I'm an American and so I'm still charmed by the quintessential Englishness of them... or if it's because I'm a Londoner and I like them just for that (who doesn't love a black cab?!). I'm loving the range ...

Cubebot -- a wooden robot
Forget flashy lights or fancy buttons... this non-traditional toy robot is made of wood and doesn't require batteries! Cubebot starts as a cube and then you can fold and twist him to create different poses -- he can sit or stand... or stand on his head! It's really so interesting how much more imaginative children's ...

London Bus from Habitat
I think the one toy in my kids' collection which gets played with most is probably their wooden London Bus. We have had that thing for nearly 6 years now and it's still going strong. Every child who ever comes over to play is always drawn to that bus. (My niece just came to stay ...

Pretend Play and Wooden Play Food
Pim (4) and Sara (6) love to pretend play -- they literally spend hours where they pretend to be mother and child, daddy and dog, seal and baby, I even caught them 'pretending' to be brother and sister (which they are, so it was quite hilarious to hear them playing: 'brother?' 'Yes, sister?'). They'll use ...

Wooden Memory Match Game from Terra Tactile
Amanda Dinova, the creator and designer behind Terra Tactile, recently sent me this wooden Memory Match game to get a taste of the little wooden toys she creates. Holztiger wooden animals
It's funny how kids develop certain interests.  I have a 4-year-old boy who is obsessed with sea creatures and a 2-year-old boy obsessed with crocodiles (don't ask)! In any case it's sometimes fun to play into their little obsessions, which is what my friend, Allison, did when she sent these darling wooden animal figures for ...

Funny Faces
The simplest toys are so often the best. One of my daughter's favorite toys has, for a long time, been the Funny Faces by Vilac. The concept is simple: 8 wooden blocks with 4 different face parts of 4 different animals on them, and then the kids' imagination can go crazy. You can make a ...

In this tiny flat I share with my three boys (one husband and two sons), space is a scarce commodity. That's why it's a huge wonder that we have an entire room (and a good-sized one, in London terms) devoted to toys! What used to be a semi-respectable reception room, has been converted to a ...
