TUESDAY TIPS
Tuesday Tips: Enjoy some extra sleep with a homemade 'Surprise Station'
Our children are really good at entertaining themselves at home, but it seems the minute we go away on a mini weekend break, or even for longer, they wake up earlier, with more energy and excitement! I get it, it's the excitement of being somewhere new, but man is it exhausting! Now that our kids ...

The first trimester of your pregnancy | what essentials do you need?
The first trimester of your pregnancy is a time of excitement and giddiness, of insecurity and of physical unease. It is also a time of waiting and very often of hiding the first signs of being pregnant! This pregnancy, I nearly entirely missed my first trimester. By the time I found out that I was expecting ...

A tip for parents of teenagers: don't be afraid to say 'no'
A while ago my cousin and I were talking to the wife of another cousin of mine, who has two children, a boy aged 20 and a girl aged 18. We both have girls who are 12 years old, who are slowly but steadily entering a whole new phase of children's development: that of puberty ...

Tuesday Tips: a pretty plaster for every little pain
Since having children I've developed a fun little interest: I pick up cool Band-Aids wherever I find them. Especially when I travel I tend to be on the lookout for new designs. It's a fun little present to bring back to the kids and they are always so happy with them! I like to keep them everywhere. In the kitchen drawer (mostly ...

A tip for brushing children's teeth: the toothbrush ABCs
This is a tip for brushing children's teeth which I learned from Courtney when we were still living in London. Easton and Sara were both tiny little toddlers, playing so sweetly together (if they weren't pulling each other's hair out). We would meet up for dinner ever so often, feed our babies their purees, give them their baths ...

A simple tip for sorting your laundry faster
How much time do you spend washing, folding and ironing laundry per week? Even with the help of my husband, my children and our cleaning lady, I still spend at least half a day a week working on it. If not more! I was just sorting through the laundry, and while folding the the boys' ...

Tuesday Tips: Introducing a second language in a single-language family
Over the years, I have received a few requests to explain how it is possible that all four of my children speak English, even though we live in the Netherlands, we solely speak Dutch at home, and, from the age of four, they attend public Dutch schools like all other Dutch children. Our children speak ...

Tuesday Tips: on twins
When we were vacationing in Morocco last week, we met a lovely British lady in a hotel who was staying there with her 7-year-old identical twin girls. We ended up following a cooking course together (tajines!) and while we were preparing the different delicious veggies and herbs, we were chatting about so many different things, ...

Tuesday Tips: The 3-minute morning music routine
No matter how early we get up, school mornings always seem to end up rushed for us. They start out relaxed and slow (there's no other way for me!), but as the clock ticks forward, the stress levels increase drastically. At the end, there's always that moment where everybody is running around like a headless ...

Tuesday Tips: breathe first!
I'm not sure if I can state this generally, but I have the gut feeling I can speak for all mothers here: mamas, we do not take enough time for ourselves. (Speaking for myself, I definitely don't.) Isn't it so easy for us mothers to forget about ourselves, to always put our children and family before ourselves? Aren't ...

Surviving long car journeys with children
OK, the title of this Tuesday Tips might be slightly exaggerated, but really -- I'm not the biggest fan of long car journeys. And especially not with children! I feel like a snack service, entertainment centre and traffic control centre all in one, and that for a very. long. time. Soon we'll have another lengthy car journey ...

Summer vacations are around the corner for us and we have lots of exciting travels coming up that we'll be sharing with you soon. About Middle Childhood, and discovering and nurturing passions
A few weeks ago I was talking to one of my friends, a psychologist, and she was mentioning that her oldest, who just turned 11, is nearing the end of her middle childhood. Intrigued by the term middle childhood, which was new to me, she explained that it is the timespan roughly between the age of 6 and ...

Tuesday Tips: how to deal with toddler tantrums?
Last week we got an email from one of our readers, asking for a post on the topic of toddler tantrums. Her two-year-old is just starting to have some bouts and tantrums and she said she's desperate for advice from fellow mums. I think this is a bit of a tricky topic, because it is so ...

Tuesday Tips: photographing your children
Over the 10 years (!!) that we've been blogging, the quality of our photography has improved quite a bit. Cameras have gotten cheaper and better (can you believe there were no iPhones when we started blogging?), easy-to-use editing programs are readily available, and we may or may not have instinctively picked up a thing or two about photography. Taking ...

Tuesday Tips: (trying to) raise good and healthy eaters
How come some children are good, healthy eaters, and some are super picky and have a difficult relationship with food? Is it a matter of nature, or of nurture? I was recently chatting with my girls' ballet teacher, a lovely lady of sixty-something, and she was telling me about her baby granddaughter, who basically refused to eat ...

Visiting Museums with Children
My husband and I love culture and history, and one of our favourite (weekend) activities is to go to museums. When traveling to new places, but also when we're at home here in Amsterdam, we love to discover the information and inspiration that museums can offer us. Our love for museums has certainly rubbed off on our children ...

A few weeks ago, Lara was lucky enough to be invited to a preview of the spectacular Buckingham Palace Gardens. If you are London based and haven’t booked your tickets yet, read on...From July until September, the 39-acre grounds of Her Majesty The Queen’s official London residence is open to the public for the first time. Visitors can enjoy a self-guided tour of highlights such as the 156-metre Herbaceous Border, plane trees planted by and named after Queen Victoria and Prince Albert and views of the island and its beehives across the 3.5-acre lake. Despite its urban location, the garden is home to a remarkable array of flora and fauna, including rare native plants seldom seen in London. Families can enjoy one of the trails or art and crafts activities (every Monday in August) and as part of two Family Festival days on 26 and 30 August, where Warden-led family tours will also be available. The added chance to enjoy a picnic (the first time this has been done since 2012) on one of the sweeping lawns makes this a truly memorable experience for all the family. Tickets are in high demand so you’ll need to be quick. Pre-booking is essential. Link in bio to book. Here’s something new to try, our take on the delicious Danish Dream Cake! We used coconut sugar throughout but for a more authentic feel, keep to the ingredients below. Ingredients: Cake: 250g plain flour 250g sugar 50g butter 3 eggs 200ml milk 2tsp baking power 1 tsp vanilla essence Topping: 125g butter 50ml milk 200g brown sugar 100g coconut flakes Method Whisk the eggs and sugar until light and fluffy. Melt the butter and add the milk to the saucepan and stir. Add to the eggs and sugar. In a separate bowl, combine the flour, vanilla essence and baking powder. Add to the other bowl, and mix it all together into a smooth batter. Line a baking tray (about 25x35 cm) and add the batter. Bake the cake at 200 C (400 F) for about 20-25 minutes. When the cake is in the oven, prepare the coconut topping. Coconut topping; melt the butter in a saucepan. Add the milk and the brown sugar and let it simmer for about a minute. Add the coconut flakes and mix it well. When the cake has been in the oven for about 20-25 minutes. Take it out and pour the coconut mixture over the it. Use a knife to spread the topping evenly. Bake the cake for another 10 minutes. Leave to cool. #babyccinoeats #baking #bakingwithkids
