Picnic Pies
My two girls are firmly of the opinion that nothing is quite as relaxing as having lunch from a basket, eating it on a blanket and being able to explore the environment the moment you have finished eating! I don't think anyone does picnic food quite as well as the Brits. After all, they are the ...

Rhubarb Cordial
As much as our whole family LOVES the Rhubarb Polenta Cake I wrote about recently; enough is enough. The 3 kg rhubarb that my father-in-law brought from his garden last week should at least partially be used for another purpose! I remember rhubarb cordial from when I was little -- my mum used to make ...

French Flan Tart -- a simple recipe
A few weeks spent in France this summer got me inspired to give the classic French Flan Tart a go. This recipe, that I wrote down a while ago, proved to be super simple and really very tasty! And seriously, don't you think it looks just like the ones in a French bakery? Here's the ...

Focaccia
I know I live in France but sometimes it is nice to have some bread other than a baguette. I found this recipe for Foccacia the other day and it is great. It is by one of my favourite cooks and food writers, Nigel Slater, who has written some fabulous recipes for the Guardian.  It ...

Blackberry Cobbler
We're currently staying at my family's beach house on Bainbridge Island (Washington State), enjoying the rocky beaches and cold, cold water of the Puget Sound. We're also enjoying the delicious blackberries that grow wild everywhere around here -- blackberries for breakfast, blackberry smoothies, blackberry jam, blackberries on ice cream... and blackberry cobbler! Yummmmm. I send ...

Beetroot
I think I only discovered the beauty of beetroot in my thirties. If I am not mistaken, when I was a kid, beetroot used to come out of a tin and had the texture of a wet piece of Styrofoam. Now that I have started buying fresh beetroot and have learned to roast or steam ...

Summer Sweetness: Upside Down Fig Cake
Living in Los Angeles, we’re so fortunate to have an abundance of fresh, organic and local produce year round. You can find farmer’s markets every day of the week in a multitude of L.A. neighborhoods with readily available, inspiring ingredients. One of the ingredients that I get particularly excited about each year is the fig. ...

Stuffed Zucchini Flowers
I am just back from the French country side where we have spent a lovely few days of just playing or, alternatively, doing strictly nothing. It is so nice to get out of the city sometimes... One of the big bonuses of our summer house is that our neighbour lets us pick vegetables out of ...

Frittata
Frittata is a delicious and extremely simple dish that you can find in any Italian region. Everybody has their own special recipe for it -- which means that you just can't go wrong. Whomever the cook, a frittata will always contains eggs (obviously), typically one or more vegetables, often some cheese and possibly some ham. ...

Green Tomato Chutney
Courtney just asked me for my recipe of green tomato chutney, as the tomatoes in London apparently decided to stay green this summer!! This recipe, that I've now used for years (apparently the green tomato problem is not unique to England) comes from Mrs. Beeton's Everyday Cookery, which was published in the 1830s!!!  Safe to say it withstood the ...

Red beet salad
My mum used to make this salad, and I was eating at my aunt's last week and she had it on the menu.  It must be a family recipe!  My kids love it (the fact that it's pink probably helps), and it's super simple to make.  And of course extremely healthy, as red beets are ...

Fruit Tiramisu (sort of)
I am currently enjoying a slower pace of life in the Italian mountains and we are 4 generations staying under one roof, ranging from the 93-year-old great grandmother to the 16- month-old baby girl. (The 16-month-old and 93-year-old get on like a house on fire, by the way!) Anyway what I love about these holidays ...

Panna Cotta
Panna Cotta is one of those easy, but elegant desserts I like to make when I have guests over.  For some reason, I usually don't think of it as a summer dessert, but my mother-in-law served it a few days ago and it was fresh, light, and super summery after all.  I owe credit for ...

Watermelon and feta salad
It's summer and it's hot here! I'm not really in a cooking mood but I still want to eat fresh things. This salad is simple, colourful and quick -- it makes a great light starter. It's not Italian, I suppose it could be Greek but funnily enough I ate it many years ago in a ...

Vinaigrette
On my French side of my family there are very strict rules concerning salad dressing, dating at least back to my grandfather, a French gourmet of the highest degree. The very idea of using anything but good sun flower oil, red wine vinegar and Dijon mustard to dress a salad is met with disdain. My ...

The perfect cocktail

I was brought up on Clafoutis, a previously little-known dessert from a little known region I come from: the Limousin.
