Summer recipes! Easy and delicious, and perfect for hot days.
Summer has finally arrived here in Amsterdam, and it's come with a BANG. We had the hottest 25th of June yesterday -- at least, since temperatures have first been recorded! With warm temperatures like these, I'm craving salads and grilled veggies for dinner. Yesterday, I cooked some brown rice and once it was cooled down ...

Fennel + Bacon Ragu -- delicious and only 30 minutes to make!
A lot of parents shy away from strongly flavoured vegetables like fennel and aren’t too sure what to do with them but there is nearly always a way to cook your vegetables so that kids will love them. For fennel -- I find it’s cutting it down and slow roasting it with its best pal, ...

The yummiest, easiest, best birthday cake recipe!
Previously, my go-to birthday cake was always my favourite carrot cake recipe (admittedly, it's still my favourite cake of all time). But... a couple years ago, my friend Aimee shared her go-to birthday cake recipe with me, and I have never gone back. It is the easiest, yummiest cake you can make. And what I ...

Ottolenghi's new 'Simple' cookbook
I received Ottolenghi's new 'Simple' cookbook in a gift exchange on Christmas Day, and it has quickly become our go-to cookbook. I have Ottolenghi's first two cookbooks, but admittedly found the recipes in those books to be too time consuming or they required too many hard-to-track-down ingredients that the recipes were impossible to make.  His ...

The very best vegetarian lasagne
I'm not sure I've mentioned it here before, but we've been a mostly vegetarian family for the past few years. We'll eat meat if it's prepared for us, whether at a friends' house or a barbecue where it's the only option, but we don't cook meat at home and haven't ordered it in a restaurant ...

Introducing solids and a few of Wilkie's favourite meals
When Easton was a baby and it came time to introduce solids, I took it all quite seriously and truthfully found it a bit stressful. I had been told I had to wait until six months to start, so we waited until the day he turned six months old. I had also read somewhere that ...

Tricks and Treats -- a collection of Halloween Ideas
Trick or treat? Do you celebrate Halloween? What do you prefer -- silly or spooky? Funny or ghoulish? In a lot of Europe it is considered a very American holiday. And as an American living in London, I am happy to see that it is becoming more popular each year. Dressing up (fancy dress as ...

A flavourful garden kale salad with Tamari and sesame
When it comes to good cooking, I feel like there are two kinds of people. Thursday Thoughts: Cooking and kids
This summer we have been cooking a lot. Nothing special or extravagant - but simple, good food that you don't need recipes for. I wanted my kids (now 10 and 8) to be able cook a full meal: starter, main and desert, without a recipe book. Here is my thinking:  We visit so many friends ...

Happy Face Shortbread Biscuits
We love our sugar cookie recipe, but because the recipe calls for shortening (which isn’t always easy to find) and requires that you put the dough in the fridge for an hour before baking, it’s not one of those quick make and bake recipes. I was on the hunt for an easier version when Ivy ...
