CW Pencil Enterprise
I love New York for many reasons, but the existence of specialized shops like CW Pencil Enterprise -- an entire store devoted to  pencils (!) - ranks high on the list. I'm by no means a pencil expert, but the selection here seems near-encyclopedic, and with a budding little writer on my hands it was ...

Il Laboratorio del Gelato
I've mentioned before that we're an ice cream-loving family, so much so that we've identified our go-to favorite ice cream spots in neighborhoods across the city for quick reference should we happen to be in the general vicinity. Il Laboratorio del Gelato tops that list when we happen to be on the Lower East Side or ...

Metropolitan Museum of Art
There's a reason the Metropolitan Museum of Art is world-renowned: its collection is encyclopedic and breathtaking, filled with recognizable masterpieces but also with works that expose you to artists or art forms you might know less intimately. It's an ideal place to start building an appreciation for art and art history in young children, and a range of family-focused ...

Silver Towers Playground/Tom Otterness Playground
Last week as I watched the streetscape speed by out the window of a taxi on my way to work, I happened to spot what looked like one of the most amazing play structures I had ever seen tucked into a small public park between two buildings on 42nd Street. A quick Google search revealed that ...

Minetta Playground
New York has plenty of destination-worthy playgrounds and public spaces, but I find myself continually thankful for the existence of the smaller neighborhood playgrounds, one or more of which can nearly always be found in areas we like to frequent for meals, shopping and entertainment, making them convenient places to stop and burn off a bit of energy. Minetta ...

High Street on Hudson
For those up and ready to hit the city early on a weekend morning, finding a good pastry and cup of coffee isn't a terribly tall order, but finding an excellent full breakfast can be a more difficult task than you might expect. Brunch at many of our favorite restaurants doesn't begin until 10:00 or ...

Day Trip to Dia:Beacon
Eighty minutes north of New York City sits Dia:Beacon, one of New York's great destinations for viewing contemporary art. Housed in a former Nabisco box factory, the expansive galleries contain the Dia Art Foundation's collection of art from the 1960s to the present, and it's a joy to meander through the the maze of rooms spread over ...

Geometry Kids, which opened last fall in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, is a lovely children's boutique carrying a well-curated and edited range of toys, clothing and accessories, decor, and books. Cold Weather Favorites: Hot Chocolate
Cold weather wandering in New York often requires a stop for something warm to drink, and I'm especially partial to hot chocolate. Though most every coffee shop and café offers a cup in a pinch, below are three favorites where you'll find it's well worth walking a bit out of the way for a cup of rich, ...

Family Bowl at Brooklyn Bowl
We've had a few very cold days this winter in New York, and as a result I've been on the hunt for new indoor activities to add to our mix of favorites. This morning we stopped by Family Bowl at Brooklyn Bowl and were absolutely won over by the combination of kid-friendly bowling, well-executed bistro food, ...

Bakeri in Brooklyn
Bakeri is the kind of café I would visit daily if either of the two locations were a bit closer to my house: casual and welcoming, with an excellent selection of house-baked breads, good coffee, and an appealing menu of breakfast and lunch choices. That the light-filled space also the most dreamy wallpaper in all of New York ...

Holiday Train Show at the New York Botanical Garden
New York is magical place to be at Christmastime, with tree stands lining the sidewalks and filling the air with the woodsy smell of pine and fir, store windows decorated with enchanting displays, lights strung across avenues and intersections, European-style Christmas markets to visit, and special holiday shows and sights to take in. As I sat down at ...

Stories Bookshop + Storytelling Lab
The proliferation of chain stores in New York often means fewer and fewer of the mom-and-pop stores that give neighborhoods so much of their character and heart. In the past year alone, our neighborhood lost one independent bookshop to rising rent and taxes, and another downsized to a much smaller space to avoid an anticipated ...

Empire State Building
Aside from the Statue of Liberty, there is hardly a more recognizable New York landmark than the Empire State Building. Since its completion in 1931, at which point it was the tallest building in the world, its presence has dominated the New York skyline. I clearly remember visiting the observatory as a child on a ...

Sea Glass Carousel
Even though we have a lovely carousel in our neighborhood, New York has a wealth of other carousels and we enjoy making special trips to visit some of the more unique ones. If you're looking for a museum that will prove as interesting for adults as it is entertaining for children, look no further than the New York Transit Museum in Downtown Brooklyn. While perhaps not as well known as some of New York's larger museums, it's a fascinating place to spend the afternoon. The stories behind New York's mass ...

Roosevelt Island Tram
Judging by my daughter's joyous reaction to most of New York City's public transportation options, our journey to a particular destination is often nearly as much fun as the destination itself.
