Schooling in Switzerland -- early independence and lots of the outdoors!
A few years ago, road tripping from Amsterdam to Tuscany, we visited the beautiful town of Zurich along the way. We spent one amazing day on the lake, enjoying the beautiful open-air beaches / swimming pools called 'Badi'. Afterwards, we stayed the night in the pretty apartment of the Prinsloo family, who were so kind ...

Weekend Getaway: Ibiza!
Oh Ibiza! If you've grown up in Europe you know the reputation of Ibiza: the best party island to dance from dusk 'til dawn. I'm sure many of us have had good times there in our pre-kids days. Discovering the island with kids sounds intriguing to say the least and there is no one with ...

Beautiful, European-style shoes at Munchkin et Moi
Shoes -- we cannot live without them so we might as well embrace them! Here in continental Europe we have some very specific styles of shoes for children. I swear you can often recognise a European child by the kind of shoes he/she is wearing! We like brogues, buckled shoes and shoes that get passed ...

A new breed of 'boutique' youth Hostels
As you might have noticed we do love travelling over here at Babyccino. Being based in Europe, especially Paris, makes it particularly easy to jump on a train, into a car or even a plane and discover new cities and countries. I try to take full advantage of this, but travelling is definitely not cheap, ...

I love Spain -- the culture, the cities, the people and the great, great food. I have not been to Madrid in years (actually decades) and had no idea if it is a good place to visit with kids.  Luckily we got some local intel from the lovely Beatriz. Beatriz, a Spanish native, lives in ...

Eating out in France
Michela and I are often asked about family-friendly restaurants in our respective cities. Try as we might, we are hard pressed to come up with good suggestions. There is a huge North/South divide in Europe regarding the obvious signs of child friendliness in restaurants. In Northern Europe you will more often than not be offered ...

Start your week off with a bang! Make these energy balls on a Monday for some extra fuel and then continue to enjoy these snacks all week. 🤎 No-bake, sugar-free Coconut Oat Energy Balls : -6 pitted fresh medjool dates (not dried), cut up into smaller chunks -30 grams sunflower seeds -30 grams pumpkin seeds -25 grams desiccated coconut -10 grams date syrup -40 grams organic oats 🤎 First combine the sunflower and pumpkin seeds into the food processor. Then pulse it until they are nicely crushed up. Next add the medjool dates, oats, desiccated coconut and date syrup. Mix. Take a teaspoon of the mixture and roll into ball. Then roll the balls in extra desiccated coconut afterwards which makes them less sticky to eat! Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to one week. Enjoy! 🤎 @laraoflondon #babyccinoeats #babyccinokids

Willow Crossley is a writer and a floral stylist. She is the mother of three gorgeous boys and is based in the beautiful counrtyside of Oxfordshire. Willow’s latest book, The Wild Journal, is utterly divine and I can’t really think of a better treat in this current climate, than reading this book. Written over a period of a year and split into the four seasons, the concept of Willow’s book is simple; a guide on how to nurture yourself through nature. With practical projects for you and the family to enjoy together and therapeutic seasonal reflections. Eton Mess is a family favourite of @laraoflondon. In our house it is referred to as ‘Messy Mash’ and that is exactly what it is. A delicious, sweet, fruity bowl of soft and fluffy meringue bits with juicy berries and delectable whipped cream! We have taken this tradition, and given it a twist adding more berries. But the history of Eton Mess, named after the famous Eton Boarding School that many prime ministers and princes, kings, etc have attended, is that “the strawberry, meringue and cream pudding was dropped at an Eton v Harrow cricket match in the late 19th century. Perhaps it was a Pavlova style desert. Rather than waste the food, it was simply scooped up off the floor and served, smashed to bits, in individual bowls.” I love the tale of this story, and my kids love smashing the berries and meringue into bits to create this wonderfully sweet but not too saccharin dessert. It is also bake-free, takes only a few minutes to make on a day where you’d rather sit in the sun then be in the kitchen. Ingredients : Meringue (2 very large or 20 smaller ones — you can make them, or we enjoy cheating this step and buying delicious ones instead) Whipping Cream 1.5 punnet of strawberries Blackberries, raspberries, blueberries, optional so add to your liking! Vanilla Pod, sliced in half and seeds removed, or vanilla paste, or extract, to your liking. I prefer not to use the vanilla extract as it leaves a bit of an alcohol flavour. Steps for the mess : Rinse all of your fruit. Chop half the strawberries and put them in a blender or smash up. Pour the double cream/whipping cream into a large mixing bowl and add the vanilla. Then whip it up! Break up the meringues into about one-inch pieces, put them in the mixing bowl with the cream, add the smashed strawberries and fold the cream in around them to give a marbled effect. Place the mixture in serving dishes. Chop the rest of the strawberries and combine with the other berries. Put on top of your smashed mixture. You may want to pour a little extra cream on top, but I like the bright, uninterrupted colours of just the berries on the top. Enjoy immediately! #babyccinokids #babyccinoeats
