How the Olympics can teach your children more than just sport
This weekend marks the start of the long awaited Olympic Games in Tokyo, one year later than planned and five years since the last Games in Brazil. The Games are always a wonderful opportunity for families to enjoy a wide variety of sports played at the very highest level, but aside from this, they can ...

Autumnal Artworks for Home Learning
As the wind brings in the seasonal change, we are welcoming in the Autumnal opportunity to incorporate some art appreciation into our home learning. My children are under 5 so art appreciation is about the visual right now but slowing creeping in is the background and stories behind the works. By using famous artworks we ...

Children's art inspired by black artists
Every month, our friends at LoLA (Lots of Lovely Art) assemble an art box with everything you need to create three high quality, artist-inspired projects: an introduction to the artist, recommendations on books and galleries to visit, plus all the materials you need to make a true masterpiece. The boxes are delivered to your front door, ...

TUESDAY TIPS
Encouraging children to read! Here are ten tips.
Both my oldest children are avid readers. Especially Sara is the kind of person who reads everything she can get her hands on: novels, series, educational books, newspapers, magazines, the back of cereal boxes -- you name it. So recognisable: I was exactly the same as a child. (I always thought it had to do ...

A multiplication chatterbox -- a simple, fun and educational craft
Ava is now seven and this is the year she learns the multiplication tables at school. We already have the chart on the toilet door (which I think must be a universal trick), but the other day she came home with a 'multiplication chatterbox'. You know, that paper folding game we played as a kid? ...

Lil'Ollo -- introducing a second language to young children
Last week we were camping at the seaside, and the kids and I were playing around with some products the recently launched company Lil'Ollo had sent us: beautifully designed games, posters and flash cards, all aimed at introducing a second language to children at a young age and in a playful, creative and imaginative way. ...

Biology and Beauty -- Hatching Butterflies at Home
While on holiday last month, we received the most exciting parcel in the mail. On the box, it said 'LIVE INSECTS, OPEN IMMEDIATELY!’ And sparked a lot of curiosity and excitement. We opened up the box, a gift sent from our very clever friends, and inside was a cup of caterpillars waiting to become butterflies! ...

A pretty times table poster by Lollipop Design
How are your kids' multiplication skills? We recently sat down with the pretty multiplication poster by Lollipop -- a design based upon the 'wheel' method of learning tables, which makes it easier for children to understand and memorise the times tables. (You might remember Courtney's post from last year, where she spoke about homeschooling and introduced the multiplication flowers.) With the ...

Tuesday Tips - Surviving Homework
I have to say being a teacher and setting homework is so much easier then being the parent who needs to help their child complete it! But last week was a success. My daughter finished all of her homework without any arguments and we still had time for some family fun. Hurray! So how did ...

Thursday Thoughts - Is Homework Healthy?
I’m of two minds when it comes to homework. I’m not sure if I love it or loathe it. When I was teaching I would hand it out with such exuberance knowing that children’s learning would be reinforced and excited for the families who would bond over the projects I set. Now I’m a mother ...

Multiplication flowers
While it has certainly not been as easy as we had imagined, we are gradually finding our way with homeschooling the kids. Every day the kids test our patience, get distracted and, in turn, can make a simple morning of learning be an extremely frustrating experience... but, there are both good days and bad days and the ...

The importance of handwriting
There are a lot of things I like about my kids schooling in France --  there are also a lot of things I criticise. Compared to the children of my Anglo-Saxon friends, school seems to be so rigid over here. One of the things I found unnecessarily strict here is the importance placed on handwriting. ...

PARENTING TIPS
Just say No?
In a recent parent-teacher meeting at my girls' school, the teachers brought up some interesting points. They were not worried about the lack of support coming from parents, but interestingly were more concerned that, in the last few years, it appears parents want to be friends with their children rather than an authority figure. In ...

Learning Maths with Numicon
I'm always learning the handiest tips from my son's teacher. Last week when I met with her, she told me about Numicon and how it's her favourite tool for teaching maths to kids. So I rushed home from the school and ordered a set from Amazon. Numicon is a simple but effective set of plastic ...

Montessori Letter Sounds App
My 4-year-old son's reading skills are really taking off, and I'm pretty sure it has much to do with the educational apps we have on our iphones/ipad. It's really cool how interactive these games are and how much the kids really pick up from them. I've never been a fan of video games for kids, ...
