'There are no Grown-Ups' by Pamela Druckerman
It really is a funny thing getting older and having older children. Babies and toddlers keep us so busy that we don't have a lot of time to think, and though it is exhausting and exhilarating at the same time, it does have the benefit of distracting us from the realisation that we are ...

9 Months: A month by month guide to pregnancy for the family to share
About 2 ½ years ago, Courtney and I met with the lovely Rachel Williams (publisher of Wide Eyed Editions and Frances Lincoln children's books, and creative brain behind a whole lot of amazingly beautiful children's publications), and she asked us the following question: if we were to write one non-fictional book for the children's market, what would that book ...

Sanctuary by Wendy Marloe and Joanna Chen
I recently came across this newly published book written by Wendy Marloe and Joanna Chen and it's really got me thinking. It's also inspired a really interesting conversation with my girls - What is your special place? Sanctuary is inspired by the notion that we all have a special place - a place of refuge; a ...

Jemmy Button by Jennifer Uman & Valerio Vidali
I think real life is usually a bit over-rated – in the fact that ‘stories’ can be so much more exciting than ‘real-life’ could ever really be. But this ‘real-life’ story is really quite remarkable. In the early 1800s Captain Robert Fitzroy set sail from England to the islands of Tierra del Fuego (South America). ...

Design Mom's book 'How to live with Kids: A room-by-room guide'
A few months ago my friend Gabrielle Blair, the famous Design Mom, asked me to share some photos of our home, for the use in the book she was working on. I was super flattered to be asked, because I have been a Design Mom fan from the moment we started blogging. Gabrielle is so ...

Where’s the Pair? by Britta Teckentrup
Courtney wrote about The Odd One Out by Britta Teckentrup and I bought it immediately – Otto loves ‘looking’ books and particularly ones where he can get involved. I love them too – these moments sitting and chatting to my 3-year-old over a book are all too precious. How they chat at this age is ...

Secret Garden, an intricate colouring book
My mom bought this Secret Garden colouring book for my kids last year and it was recently rediscovered when we went through our crafts cupboard last week during the move. My kids (especially Quin) have enjoyed colouring in the intricate colouring pages, and the end result is so pretty I've started hanging up all of their ...

Rosie Revere, engineer
My kids (and I) love the book Iggy Peck, architect, so when Andrea Beaty wrote a sequence called Rosie Revere, engineer, expectations in our household were high. And Rosie did not disappoint! The main character, Rosie Revere, dreams of becoming an engineer, but is very insecure and practises her skills in secret in the attic. ...

Madame Pamplemousse and her Incredible Edibles
Sometimes I have slight nostalgia pangs to the days when my children were cute, cuddly little babies, but I do love seeing them grow up and start discovering new things all the time; books being one of them. We did a huge tidy up in the kids room over the holidays and gifted all the ...

Aspen's Roots
Did you know that a new aspen tree is not started from a single seed like other trees, but as a root sucker generated from other existing roots beneath the ground? And that, because of this, aspens grow in groves where they are all related (clones) of each other with intertwining generations (grandparents and great ...

Build The Human Body
My oldest has a birthday coming up. Eight! It sounds so big to me! He's at that tender age where he is no longer a little kid in a needy way, but yet he's still so naive and blissfully unaware of 'cool'. Still happy to hold my hand as we walk into his classroom and ...

Simply For Flying, a children's logbook

Funny finger worms from Hervé Tullet
Ava got this little book 'The Game of Finger Worms' by Hervé Tullet for Christmas and she absolutely adores it. The concept is so simple (a hole in the book through which you can stick your finger with a little face drawn on it), but the effect on a 19-month-old is so big! She has ...
