BIRTHDAY PARTIES
Party Animals -- a 2nd birthday party with useful and resourceful planning tips
To celebrate Joseph's second birthday we decided to keep it super simple, and the end result was a very special party. It was last minute -- we organised everything in exactly one week. Sometimes life is just so busy! So instead of an amazingly involved party theme (although I do love those as well), I ...

Regal Crowns -- easy to make, fun to wear
This year I helped organise the making of crowns for my daughter's school Nativity play. The theme was the Three Kings, with not three but in fact ninety kings (!). We needed to create some instant drama, and these paper and jewel crowns did the trick. Making these en masse for the whole class was ...

My Little Day: Un Super Anniversaire
There are people in this world who know how to throw a birthday party for their children with panache (Esther being the prime example). Then there are people like me, who draw a blank when it comes to entertaining 10 kids in my house for a few hours! (I am really good at entertaining adults, ...

Giant Balloons
I discovered these giant balloons on My Little Day and now cannot wait for one of my kid's birthday parties to come up. I think they are so cool. They get up to 90 cm big and still are as light as a feather -- so much fun to throw around and play with! I also ...

Pinatas
Seriously, is there anything better in the world than beating on a massive ball with a stick and, when you finally smash it open, being showered in bonbons? It's no wonder kids go crazy for piñatas. Piñatas had not really crossed my radar until I went on holiday to Mexico last year. But now we can't ...

Retro class treats
I'm not sure how it works in other countries, but here in the Netherlands kids are supposed to hand out treats to their classmates when it's their birthday. The teacher will make a special birthday crown, the class will sing happy birthday, and afterwards the treats are handed out to the other kids. Fun! It ...

Monkey Choo
The art of organising children's birthday parties is something I think universities should offer a degree in. Which games to play, what cake to serve, what types of entertainment, what decorations, which venue and what to put into goodie bags... all very, very important questions! The French website Monkey Choo is a great place to pick ...

A Japanese birthday party
My daughter's favourite food is sushi (or shushi as she calls it). She loves everything about it -- the rolls, the maki, the sashimi... Personally I ate sushi for the first time when I was 25 years old -- I vividly remember queuing for the first Yo!Sushi restaurant when I was studying in London in ...

The Toadstool Tea
I can't believe my daughter has just turned one -- time has flown. Now I know a one-year-old might not appreciate a proper birthday party, but I can't resist one.  And in the spirit of being 'girly' there was nothing for it but a fairy tea-party, to be more specific The Toadstool Tea (for those ...

Birthday gifts for a "No Gifts Please" party
When I was a kid, birthday parties were thrown at home and consisted of three elements: 1) Food:  Cake (and one that generally looked like this) 2) Décor: party hats, a few stray balloons, a lone streamer taped to a wall somewhere. 3) Entertainment: pin the tail on the donkey, duck-duck-goose and an overall scene ...

Agence Ludique
Organizing a kid's birthday party is always a logistical nightmare in Paris. How do you fit all of these little people who take up so much space into a flat!? Lets face it, I love to throw a party, but not enough to have my flat turned into a bomb site. This is where the ...

Earlier this week, a successful beauty blogger in the Netherlands, Nikkie de Jager @nikkietutorials publicly announced that she is transgender. A very brave thing to do and was incredibly impressed by her story and the way she chose to share it. If you haven’t seen it yet, there is a lot to learn from Nikkie’s coming out video on youtube. It is an inspiring message from a strong roll model, addressing young people who feel insecure, misunderstood or simply not in the right place. It is about acceptance, respect, hearing and understanding each other, about writing your own story, about the power of being yourself — whoever you are and whatever you are. It is also about the importance of supportive parenting. Nikkie shares that she is intensely grateful for her mother, who always saw and heard, listened and understood, respected and supported her in her choices and in her transition. We have always tried to be straightforward in discussing sex and reproduction with our children, and open about the idea that heterosexuality is just one shade of a wider spectrum of diversity. Thanks for the new blog post @estherbabyccino ... what are your thoughts? Comment below and link is in bio. #babyccinokids #thursdaythoughts
