TUESDAY TIPS
Tuesday Tips: a pretty plaster for every little pain
Since having children I've developed a fun little interest: I pick up cool Band-Aids wherever I find them. Especially when I travel I tend to be on the lookout for new designs. It's a fun little present to bring back to the kids and they are always so happy with them! I like to keep them everywhere. In the kitchen drawer (mostly ...

What to pack in your hospital bag
As I wrote last week, we are hoping to welcome our baby at home (there is a big inflatable birth pool in my bedroom as I write this! on the eve of my due date no less!), so I have not even packed a hospital bag. Everything we need for the birth and for the baby ...

A tip for brushing children's teeth: the toothbrush ABCs
This is a tip for brushing children's teeth which I learned from Courtney when we were still living in London. Easton and Sara were both tiny little toddlers, playing so sweetly together (if they weren't pulling each other's hair out). We would meet up for dinner ever so often, feed our babies their purees, give them their baths ...

Preparing for baby -- stocking the freezer!
With colourful Autumn produce spilling out of our local Farmer's Market this weekend, I was reminded of this time last year. I was pregnant with an obvious bump on display, and was enjoying the change of seasons with winter drawing ever nearer as I grew ever bigger. I also recalled the yummy feasts of stews and soups that ...

Traveling Mamas, without the Papas
Would you travel internationally for a total of 22 hours with a toddler and a baby, (or more children?), and without another adult or helping hand? I just did this summer. Not once, not twice, but four times (ok, two of those times were domestic US flights so they were a bit shorter). After my ...

The power of the embarrassing parent!
My kids are wonderful (of course I would say that), strong willed, independent little women and on the whole, they are easy to get along with. But there are moments where they seem to feel that, by repeating over and over and over again that they want a packet of chocolate eggs in the isle of ...

Introducing a newborn sibling: Head, shoulders, knees and toes...
How did you introduce your older children to your brand new and adorable newborn? I received great advice from a friend about that first moment when they meet, which was really easy to do... When you introduce the beautiful new baby to its siblings, you shouldn't hold the baby. It can easily look like the sibling is ...

Choosing the best sun protection for your kids
During this year of adventure we have enjoyed mostly sunny, warm climates. This was by design, of course, and following the sun meant we didn't have to burden ourselves or our bags with heavy, winter clothing. The slight downside was that we have spent a year toting around hats, sun shirts and sun cream, rarely going a day without thinking about sun ...

A simple tip for sorting your laundry faster
How much time do you spend washing, folding and ironing laundry per week? Even with the help of my husband, my children and our cleaning lady, I still spend at least half a day a week working on it. If not more! I was just sorting through the laundry, and while folding the the boys' ...

Reassure Soon-to-be Siblings with a Simple Video
How do you take care of your eldest child(ren) when you are about to have a baby? Well, I recently ran into a local mum. She is due with her second child and asked me what I experienced differently while pregnant the second time. And my answer, without even thinking twice, was that I worried more about ...

Encouraging your child to walk
Over the past ten months of our travels, Michael and I have fallen into a bad habit. We try to encourage Marlow to walk wherever we go, but she never gets far before asking (and then demanding...) to be carried. She has become so spoiled having both her parents (and big brothers!) with her every day, ...

Tuesday Tips: A genius swim trick!
Until this week, Marlow couldn't swim. In fact, she was never really enthusiastic about getting in the water and when she did, she wore floaties to keep her afloat. I was chatting to a friend in Australia last month, a mother of three, and she said, "You know the trick for teaching your kids to swim, ...

Tuesday Tips - Surviving Homework
I have to say being a teacher and setting homework is so much easier then being the parent who needs to help their child complete it! But last week was a success. My daughter finished all of her homework without any arguments and we still had time for some family fun. Hurray! So how did ...

Tuesday Tips: A simple birthday party
Esther has organised some epic kids birthday parties, some of my favourite being the disco party and the stick horse party . I on the other hand am terrible at this! I seriously cannot compete. Tuesday Tips: Introducing a second language in a single-language family
Over the years, I have received a few requests to explain how it is possible that all four of my children speak English, even though we live in the Netherlands, we solely speak Dutch at home, and, from the age of four, they attend public Dutch schools like all other Dutch children. Our children speak ...

Tuesday Tips: Travelling on a budget
My husband is the king of spreadsheets. I often joke that he doesn't make a single decision without consulting a spreadsheet first. Tuesday Tips: The 3-minute morning music routine
No matter how early we get up, school mornings always seem to end up rushed for us. They start out relaxed and slow (there's no other way for me!), but as the clock ticks forward, the stress levels increase drastically. At the end, there's always that moment where everybody is running around like a headless ...

Tuesday Tips: Meal planning
Esther and I were talking the other day about dinnertime and how neither of us are very good at planning the week's meals out in advance. Esther has always impressed me with her spur-of-the-moment, find-something-in-the-cupboards type of cooking, which she's very good at doing. I thankfully have a husband who is good at that, which means ...

Tuesday Tips: breathe first!
I'm not sure if I can state this generally, but I have the gut feeling I can speak for all mothers here: mamas, we do not take enough time for ourselves. (Speaking for myself, I definitely don't.) Earlier this week, a successful beauty blogger in the Netherlands, Nikkie de Jager @nikkietutorials publicly announced that she is transgender. A very brave thing to do and was incredibly impressed by her story and the way she chose to share it. If you haven’t seen it yet, there is a lot to learn from Nikkie’s coming out video on youtube. It is an inspiring message from a strong roll model, addressing young people who feel insecure, misunderstood or simply not in the right place. It is about acceptance, respect, hearing and understanding each other, about writing your own story, about the power of being yourself — whoever you are and whatever you are. It is also about the importance of supportive parenting. Nikkie shares that she is intensely grateful for her mother, who always saw and heard, listened and understood, respected and supported her in her choices and in her transition. We have always tried to be straightforward in discussing sex and reproduction with our children, and open about the idea that heterosexuality is just one shade of a wider spectrum of diversity. Thanks for the new blog post @estherbabyccino ... what are your thoughts? Comment below and link is in bio. #babyccinokids #thursdaythoughts

If you’re looking for an idea to help children run off that pre-dinner energy, this is it... a winter scavenger hunt! The idea from our lovely Shannon @slcorlis is a pretty loose and flexible one: to walk around after dark and see how many winter and holiday things kids can spot either decorating homes and businesses or peeking through windows. Decorations are often left up until early January, so there’s still plenty of time to have a go at this before the end of the season. See her helpful how to on today’s blog. #babyccinokids #scavengerhunt #winteractivities
