Foraging (or collecting edible weeds)
Have you ever gone to your local park, forest or garden to collect edible weeds? My kids and I love to go out and pick our dinner in 'the wild'. It's fun, and I think it teaches them something about food and nature. Also, it motivates them to help prepare dinner (and eat it). We've been making ...

Ivy's colouring party
Ivy turned six last week and we hosted a little party in our back garden to celebrate her big day. It's become a tradition in our family of hosting parties at home and on the actual day of the birthday rather than waiting for a weekend day to celebrate -- it's our way of keeping ...

When the sea calls...
This past Saturday, despite the weather being quite cold and windy, we felt the urge to drive out of London and get ourselves to the seaside. Friends laughed at us when we told them we were going to drive two hours only to spend a cold day at the beach, but it turned out to be ...

How to care for your tulips
I grew up in a small farming town about half way between Seattle and Vancouver, Canada. The area is known for the wonderful produce that is grown there, including all the delicious berries in the summer, but is probably best known for the hundreds of acres of tulip fields that bloom each spring (I have previously ...

A fun way to use all those conkers your kids have collected
My friend, AC, is one of those wild outdoorsy types (in the coolest of ways, of course) who embraces the outdoors, no matter the weather, and comes up with the most creative and fun ways to entertain her kids. She's such a fun mama, and I'm really hoping she'll rub off on me a bit in the ...

This boy, and balls!
Pim's football (soccer) season has started and yesterday we went to the first training of the term. Pim really enjoys his weekly football, and Tamar and I always joke that he is a real team player, but certainly not a champ. Meaning, he loves to be in the company of his friends, chit-chatting with the boys and having a good time -- ...

The Little Things... A Nature Scavenger Hunt
Beautiful leaves are falling on the forest grounds, beechnuts, hazelnuts and chestnuts can easily be found (a tasty discovery!), and upon close forest floor examination, a world of interesting insects can be explored. A little walk outdoors, just a few steps in the autumn nature, opens up an entire world! Ava and her two little ...

Perfect Picnics!
Did you know that last week was National Picnic Week here in the UK? It's an initiative to encourage people to get outside and enjoy the great outdoors. (With this lousy weather we're having, it's true we all need a bit of encouragement! Blaaah!) Anyway, we thought we would roll with the picnic theme and ...

Don't forget the birds!
This is a project I remember from when I was a child. Every winter my mum would buy a big bag of peanuts, and we would sit down and string them together in long garlands, to decorate the trees and feed the hungry birds. This week, the birds must be especially hungry (it's freezing cold ...

Stick significance
Right next to our front door there's an ever present collection of sticks. Our 5-year-old son Pim is like a dog, seriously! Every time we go to the park, he will find a stick and insists on taking it home. Some of them are too big for him to carry alone, so he has to ...

A beach scavenger hunt
My kids and I spent last week at my family's beach house on Bainbridge Island, just off Seattle. We had friends from Belgium join us, and our six kids ran around from dawn until way after dusk playing on the beach and swimming in the cold water. When we woke up one morning to blustery ...

This weekend we had such a treat: one day without rain and even (yes!) a few rays of sunshine!! Hurray for May! Seriously, the weather has been so lousy here in Amsterdam, we're in much need of sun. Anyway, we decided it was time to spend a day in our little garden to plant all ...

I had a look through my handbag today. The amount of rubbish I carry around with me is unbelievable. No wonder I have an achy back! But between all the rubbish are some essential items that just need to be in my handbag 24/7. There is lip balm, some tissues and my wallet. There is also my ...

Nasturtiums -- a gardeners dream!
In Dutch we call them 'East Indian Cress' -- my favourite plant in our garden! I love the pretty round leaves of the nasturtiums, I love how wild and crazy (and easy!) they grow, and I love the beautiful, tissue-paper-like flowers, with their bright, happy colours. Both the leaves and the flowers of the nasturtium ...

Earlier this week, a successful beauty blogger in the Netherlands, Nikkie de Jager @nikkietutorials publicly announced that she is transgender. A very brave thing to do and was incredibly impressed by her story and the way she chose to share it. If you haven’t seen it yet, there is a lot to learn from Nikkie’s coming out video on youtube. It is an inspiring message from a strong roll model, addressing young people who feel insecure, misunderstood or simply not in the right place. It is about acceptance, respect, hearing and understanding each other, about writing your own story, about the power of being yourself — whoever you are and whatever you are. It is also about the importance of supportive parenting. Nikkie shares that she is intensely grateful for her mother, who always saw and heard, listened and understood, respected and supported her in her choices and in her transition. We have always tried to be straightforward in discussing sex and reproduction with our children, and open about the idea that heterosexuality is just one shade of a wider spectrum of diversity. Thanks for the new blog post @estherbabyccino ... what are your thoughts? Comment below and link is in bio. #babyccinokids #thursdaythoughts
