A beach scavenger hunt
My kids and I spent last week at my family's beach house on Bainbridge Island, just off Seattle. We had friends from Belgium join us, and our six kids ran around from dawn until way after dusk playing on the beach and swimming in the cold water. When we woke up one morning to blustery ...

DIY: a picnic basket
One of the things that we most love about the arrival of summer is to have picnics! Prepare a simple meal and eat it outdoors -- it is just sooo nice. And I am definitely ready for it. I loved it when I found these cute carton picnic boxes at SelpPackaging,  so ideal for giving them a ...

Gardening time!
This weekend we had such a treat: one day without rain and even (yes!) a few rays of sunshine!! Hurray for May! Seriously, the weather has been so lousy here in Amsterdam, we're in much need of sun. Anyway, we decided it was time to spend a day in our little garden to plant all ...

A mum's best friend
I had a look through my handbag today. The amount of rubbish I carry around with me is unbelievable. No wonder I have an achy back! But between all the rubbish are some essential items that just need to be in my handbag 24/7. There is lip balm, some tissues and my wallet. There is also my ...

Nasturtiums -- a gardeners dream!
In Dutch we call them 'East Indian Cress' -- my favourite plant in our garden! I love the pretty round leaves of the nasturtiums, I love how wild and crazy (and easy!) they grow, and I love the beautiful, tissue-paper-like flowers, with their bright, happy colours. Both the leaves and the flowers of the nasturtium ...

Outdoor ice baubles
I picked my son up from his kindergarten today and these were hanging on the trees outside -- what a 'cool' (get it?) idea! Yesterday, the children had chosen leaves and set them on plates covered in water with a loop of string hanging over the edge.  Overnight the ice had frozen into these beautiful ...

Water-resistant garlands from Hip Hooray
I recently discovered these nifty reusable SmartGarlands from Hip Hooray. What makes them so brilliant is that they look like the beautiful tissue paper garlands I love so much... yet they're made of a water-resistant, high density polyethylene material which makes them super durable and totally reusable.  I can't tell you how many garlands I've ...

For the little budding gardener
Considering how gardening helps children learn about the cycle of life and about time, patience, nature, and cause and effect... I can't think of a better gift for a child than this mini greenhouse by HaPe. Not to mention the cool design -- it is made of birch plywood and bamboo and cleverly designed to ...

Bacsac -- a garden on the go
I have been hankering for my own vegetable garden for some time now.  Whenever I hear stories of the home veggie garden type, the abundant yield of fresh, nutritious and ripe fruit and vegetables that costs so little and provides endless enjoyment for the whole family, I am, pardon the pun, green with envy. But ...

Camping: The good, the bad and the ugly
We’ve just completed our 30-day drive up the eastern coast of Australia in a campervan, driving more than 4,000 km from Sydney to Cairns with a few detours in between. We did and saw some amazing things, but I think it’s safe to say that we’re happy our camping days are behind us! I’m still ...

Battersea Park
Weekends are always for adventures and when we stumbled from our cosy little burrow last summer into Battersea Park we hit upon treasure.  The Park is situated just south of the river between the Albert and the Chelsea Bridge.  We drove and parked up at one of the many car-parks around the park.  We got ...

Paris Plage
It is that time of year again here in Paris: the right bank of the Seine has been taken over by lounge chairs, palm trees, sun and sand. If you happen to be in Paris for the month of August (most Parisians have left for the country and the city is spookily quiet) Paris Plage ...

Tickle me plants
About two years ago we visited the Eden project in Cornwall (UK) where my husband and I at some point spent a good 15 minutes playing with a plant that would react to our touch by closing its leaves! So cute! It was as if the plant was communicating with us! I recently found out ...

Hampstead Heath
We lived in London for nearly two years before we discovered the Hampstead Heath, which is a huge shame as it is one of London's finest gems, and is, in my opinion, the most liberating outdoor activity in London. The fact that you can feel so far removed from the 'hustle and bustle' of London ...

Macrobiotic goat farm Ridammerhoeve
On the southern outskirts of Amsterdam is a huge park/woodland called the 'Amsterdamse Bos' (Amsterdam Forest). It offers great activities for kids, like swimming pools, playgrounds, a theater, a pancakes restaurant, and one of our family's absolute favourite outdoor activities in Amsterdam: the macrobiotic goat farm 'Ridammerhoeve'. The beauty of this goat farm is that it is really, in all reality, a ...

Hi guys! Here Bethie and I are showing you how to prepare a super easy dish that your family will love -- a video we bring to you in cooperation with Abel & Cole, deliverer of fabulous food boxes filled to the brim with organic freshness! Here's the list of ingredients: a royal 1 tbsp of olive oil 1 butternut squash 1 red onion 2 red peppers 2 garlic cloves 4 vine tomatoes 150g quinoa sea salt & freshly ground pepper 300 ml vegetable stock 2 tbsp red wine vinegar 25g raisins 80g black olives And for the garnish: a handful of chervil feta (optional) Directions: Peel your butternut squash. Cut in half and scoop out the seeds. Chop the flesh into 1cm chunks. Peel and cut the onion into thick slices. Cut the pepper in half and scoop out the seeds and white pith. Chop into bitesized pieces. Peel and thinly slice the garlic. Roughly chop the tomatoes. Rinse the quinoa under cold water to remove any bitterness. Heat 1 tbsp olive oil in a large heavy based pan. Tip in all the veg and quinoa. Pour in the veg stock and the red wine vinegar. Add the raisins and the olives. Season with salt and pepper. Pop on a lid and cook for 30-40 mins until the squash is soft and the sauce thick. Stir every now and then during cooking. Scatter over the chervil (or flat leaf parsley leaves) and serve in warm bowls. Top with crumbled feta if you like! A super colourful, super easy and super delicious dish for taste buds of all ages! Bon appétit!
