NEW YORK: CHELSEA

The Play Area at Chelsea Waterside Park
Add this to our list of favorite playgrounds in New York (and perhaps to your list of playgrounds to visit if you're traveling to New York!): Chelsea Waterside Park Play Area in Manhattan's Chelsea neighborhood. I'd seen little glimpses of it previously, and with a day off from school, perfect fall weather, and two kids ...

Statue of Liberty Cruise with Classic Harbor Line
Viewing some of New York's most recognizable landmarks from the water, during golden hour, aboard a 1920s-inspired wooden yacht...sounds pretty amazing, right? I can't believe I'd forgotten about this trip we took last spring until it popped up in my Instagram memories earlier this week, but looking at the photos again I'm reminded of what ...

Dizengoff
There are times in New York when popular attractions or restaurants are worth braving the crowds, and Dizengoff, an Israeli-style hummusiya located in Chelsea Market, meets the criteria. Chelsea Market, one of New York's original indoor food halls, is still incredibly popular with both locals and tourists alike and on weekends its assortment of stores and ...

Books of Wonder - a children's bookstore
As convenient as Amazon and other similar websites can be, leisurely browsing a good bookstore is a thrill all its own. Given how prominently children's books feature in the rhythm of my days since my daughter's birth, having the opportunity to refresh and supplement our growing library is one I take advantage of whenever possible. Books of Wonder, ...

Chelsea Piers
A huge three-pier complex on the West Side Highway, Chelsea Piers is New York’s answer to suburban living. The sprawling sporting and entertainment paradise has it all – a multi-story golf driving range, swimming pool, world-class gym, Olympic sized skating rink, bowling alley, sun deck, skate park, a kids ball pit, a playground and a ...

The Highline
You can’t help but LOVE New York City if you take an early evening stroll on The Highline. Not only is the people-watching fantastic but the whole experience will just make you feel cool. The Highline was the old elevated subway system in NYC and after years of sitting dilapidated and unused it has been ...

The Limelight Marketplace
In the 1980s, early '90s, The Limelight was perhaps the most popular nightclub in New York City. Known for its wild parties, weekly drug busts, and all around freakiness, the club closed its doors long ago but the space itself has recently been transformed and re-opened as a...gasp...mini-mall. The old cathedral space is now The ...

Billy's Bakery. Diagnosis...Delicious
The cupcake competition in New York has swelled to epic proportions and it seems like there are cupcake pop-up shops everywhere all of a sudden. I am not sure why, as a society, we have become so obsessed with this portable baked good but who's complaining? I am totally psyched to be able to get ...

Kidding Around Toys
While I would really love for my kids to play with handcrafted, eco-friendly and artistically stunning toys, I also know full well that I might as well just set a pile of money on fire. The beautiful wooden farm house with hand painted animals is coated in a layer of dust. The hand-sewn finger puppet ...

Pop Burger
As mentioned in an earlier post, I am not a huge fan of eating out with young kids. It’s not good for the digestion. But then again, there is Pop Burger. This unassuming and very hip burger joint in the trendy Meatpacking district is actually one of my favorite super duper secret places to grab ...

Chelsea Market
I really try to avoid taking my twins out to eat. It is nothing short of torture for me. Seriously….it’s like the minute they see that dilapidated cup of crayons and sad coloring placemat coming at them they start to make a scene. Chelsea Market, on the other hand, is now a destination of mine ...

Earlier this week, a successful beauty blogger in the Netherlands, Nikkie de Jager @nikkietutorials publicly announced that she is transgender. A very brave thing to do and was incredibly impressed by her story and the way she chose to share it. If you haven’t seen it yet, there is a lot to learn from Nikkie’s coming out video on youtube. It is an inspiring message from a strong roll model, addressing young people who feel insecure, misunderstood or simply not in the right place. It is about acceptance, respect, hearing and understanding each other, about writing your own story, about the power of being yourself — whoever you are and whatever you are. It is also about the importance of supportive parenting. Nikkie shares that she is intensely grateful for her mother, who always saw and heard, listened and understood, respected and supported her in her choices and in her transition. We have always tried to be straightforward in discussing sex and reproduction with our children, and open about the idea that heterosexuality is just one shade of a wider spectrum of diversity. Thanks for the new blog post @estherbabyccino ... what are your thoughts? Comment below and link is in bio. #babyccinokids #thursdaythoughts

If you’re looking for an idea to help children run off that pre-dinner energy, this is it... a winter scavenger hunt! The idea from our lovely Shannon @slcorlis is a pretty loose and flexible one: to walk around after dark and see how many winter and holiday things kids can spot either decorating homes and businesses or peeking through windows. Decorations are often left up until early January, so there’s still plenty of time to have a go at this before the end of the season. See her helpful how to on today’s blog. #babyccinokids #scavengerhunt #winteractivities
