NEW YORK: BROOKLYN
EAT
Insa - a modern Korean BBQ restaurant in Brooklyn
Not infrequently, it occurs to me that my children are experiencing a far different childhood growing up in Brooklyn than I did, being raised in a small town in a rural state. One area this certainly holds true is with food and restaurants, and so far I've loved taking advantage of New York's rich culinary ...

Pizza at Roberta's in Brooklyn
Ask ten New Yorkers where to find the best pizza and you're likely to receive ten different responses. New York is a serious pizza town, and opinions, like the styles of the pizzas themselves, vary. It might surprise some, then, that one of my very favorite pizza places isn't focused only on pizza, and may ...

Books Are Magic
A neighborhood bookstore is so much more than simply a place to purchase books, don't you think? As a local, a bookstore's a place to be home without being home, a second living room, a place to gather, relax, mingle and watch your children dive headfirst into the magical worlds only books reveal. As a ...

VHH Foods -- an all-day eatery in Brooklyn
We returned to Brooklyn on Sunday after a week and a half away and faced sights familiar, I'm sure, to many families upon return from travel: an empty refrigerator, a mountain of luggage needing unpacking, and tired-looking faces all around. In the name of making sure everyone turned in for the night with full bellies ...

Cold Weather Favorites: Hot Chocolate
Cold weather wandering in New York often requires a stop for something warm to drink, and I'm especially partial to hot chocolate. Though most every coffee shop and café offers a cup in a pinch, below are three favorites where you'll find it's well worth walking a bit out of the way for a cup of rich, ...

Bakeri in Brooklyn
Bakeri is the kind of café I would visit daily if either of the two locations were a bit closer to my house: casual and welcoming, with an excellent selection of house-baked breads, good coffee, and an appealing menu of breakfast and lunch choices. That the light-filled space also the most dreamy wallpaper in all of New York ...

Stories Bookshop + Storytelling Lab
The proliferation of chain stores in New York often means fewer and fewer of the mom-and-pop stores that give neighborhoods so much of their character and heart. In the past year alone, our neighborhood lost one independent bookshop to rising rent and taxes, and another downsized to a much smaller space to avoid an anticipated ...

Like most apartment-dwellers in New York, the amount of space available in our home for toys and playthings is relatively modest. Tiny Brooklyn
Running through the Brooklyn neighborhoods of Cobble Hill and Carroll Gardens, Court Street's commercial appeal lies in its fascinating mix of restaurants and shops. Hi guys! Here Bethie and I are showing you how to prepare a super easy dish that your family will love -- a video we bring to you in cooperation with Abel & Cole, deliverer of fabulous food boxes filled to the brim with organic freshness! Here's the list of ingredients: a royal 1 tbsp of olive oil 1 butternut squash 1 red onion 2 red peppers 2 garlic cloves 4 vine tomatoes 150g quinoa sea salt & freshly ground pepper 300 ml vegetable stock 2 tbsp red wine vinegar 25g raisins 80g black olives And for the garnish: a handful of chervil feta (optional) Directions: Peel your butternut squash. Cut in half and scoop out the seeds. Chop the flesh into 1cm chunks. Peel and cut the onion into thick slices. Cut the pepper in half and scoop out the seeds and white pith. Chop into bitesized pieces. Peel and thinly slice the garlic. Roughly chop the tomatoes. Rinse the quinoa under cold water to remove any bitterness. Heat 1 tbsp olive oil in a large heavy based pan. Tip in all the veg and quinoa. Pour in the veg stock and the red wine vinegar. Add the raisins and the olives. Season with salt and pepper. Pop on a lid and cook for 30-40 mins until the squash is soft and the sauce thick. Stir every now and then during cooking. Scatter over the chervil (or flat leaf parsley leaves) and serve in warm bowls. Top with crumbled feta if you like! A super colourful, super easy and super delicious dish for taste buds of all ages! Bon appétit!
