Coney Island
New York City is filled with magical experiences for kids, from the simple joy of riding the subway or the tram, to the more outsize adventures of peering down on the cityscape from great heights or spinning around in a carousel at the foot of one of the world's more recognizable bridges. But putting yourself in ...

Domino Park in Williamsburg, Brooklyn
We found our new destination for summer fun yesterday in the newly-opened Domino Park in Williamsburg Brooklyn and we haven't stopped raving about it since. With an excellent playground, a fountain for splashing, plenty of green space for relaxing and play, and even a casual spot for tacos and other Mexican fare, the park should ...

Ice Skating at The Standard Ice Rink
During the winter months ice skating rinks pop up around New York and they can be a great way to make the best of a season that otherwise doesn't always encourage you to spend a lot of time outside. The most famous rink is easily the one at Rockefeller Center, but I think my favorite ...

Sailing model boats on Conservatory Water in Central Park
My daughter began attending preschool earlier this fall, and to help celebrate this milestone I took her for a special outing on one of the last days before the school year started. She had admired the model boats sailing on Conservatory Water during past trips to Central Park, so we decided to try our hand ...

Teardrop Park in Battery Park City
I included Teardrop Park in Battery Park City in my list of favorite places to take a break around town, but a repeat visit this past weekend made me eager to share more about why I think it's such a fantastic little park. Filling the space created between four tall residential towers, the park offers ...

Silver Towers Playground/Tom Otterness Playground
Last week as I watched the streetscape speed by out the window of a taxi on my way to work, I happened to spot what looked like one of the most amazing play structures I had ever seen tucked into a small public park between two buildings on 42nd Street. A quick Google search revealed that ...

Minetta Playground
New York has plenty of destination-worthy playgrounds and public spaces, but I find myself continually thankful for the existence of the smaller neighborhood playgrounds, one or more of which can nearly always be found in areas we like to frequent for meals, shopping and entertainment, making them convenient places to stop and burn off a bit of energy. Minetta ...

Family Bowl at Brooklyn Bowl
We've had a few very cold days this winter in New York, and as a result I've been on the hunt for new indoor activities to add to our mix of favorites. This morning we stopped by Family Bowl at Brooklyn Bowl and were absolutely won over by the combination of kid-friendly bowling, well-executed bistro food, ...

Sea Glass Carousel
Even though we have a lovely carousel in our neighborhood, New York has a wealth of other carousels and we enjoy making special trips to visit some of the more unique ones. Topping this list is the Sea Glass Carousel nestled in The Battery, a large park at the very southern tip of Manhattan. The carousel, ...

Governor's Island
One of New York's best quick escapes doesn't require leaving New York at all: Governor's Island lies just off the southern tip of Manhattan in New York Harbor and a 5-minute ferry ride (even shorter if you're coming from Brooklyn) delivers you to an island where you'll feel a world away from bustling streets and sidewalks. ...

Imagination Playground
The vast majority of playgrounds in New York City offer variations on relatively constant themes: slides, swings, ladders, and elevated structures to encourage physical play. I'm grateful for the proliferation of these playgrounds - regardless of where in the city we end up there's almost always a playground a couple blocks away presenting the perfect ...

Pier 25
For children in New York, summer unofficially begins when the sprinklers, or spray showers, turn on in parks and playgrounds. Nearly every play space has a water feature and the anticipation of the first truly warm day seems to be a May ritual, with children willing the temperature to break 80 degrees fahrenheit in order to trigger the ...

MIDTOWN MANHATTAN
Bryant Park
Block after block, much of Midtown Manhattan has a uniform feel: acres of poured concrete sidewalks and asphalt roadways pulsing with foot and vehicle traffic, and walls of stone and glass rising up on all sides. It's such a pleasant surprise to come across Bryant Park then, an island of green in a sea of gray. Designed in ...

Spring in New York always feels like a small miracle, and watching the city shrug off the monotone grays of winter as it assumes the riotous colors of spring never gets old. Most any park or tree-lined street will do for soaking up the beauty of the budding season, but for a full immersion a ...

When both of my kids broke out in uncontrollable laughter as I read Eletelephony by Laura E. Richards, I knew we had a winner! Do your children love poems and can they recite any by heart? Today on our blog @slcorlis shares an interesting New York Times article on the value of memorizing poetry, which historically was very common (before the invention of writing, it was the only way to possess a poem) but has mostly fallen out of favor in more recent times (why bother memorizing something when you can simply call it up on your phone at a moment’s notice?). It speaks about the value of diligent work and the benefits that come from challenging ourselves, and also of the way the repetition involved in memorizing draws you closer to words and their meaning, and to the broader world of literature and human experience. What about you? Do you remember reciting poems from memory as a child? And finally, do share any poetry collections you’ve loved reading as a family. ️ #babyccinokids #babyccinoreads

Conker spiderwebs! This is an oldie but a goodie, perfect for a weekend craft, manageable for little hands but also extremely entertaining for bigger ones. And it’s quite an addictive thing to do! You’ll need : Conkers Wooden skewers Any sharp tool like pointy scissors to make a little hole in the conkers Yarn Scissors Make 5 evenly spread out holes in the conkers. Push the skewers in the holes so they are tightly inserted. Choose a yarn to start with. With a flat knot, secure the yarn around one of the skewers. Start weaving by twisting around each skewer before you go to the next one. If you want to start a new colour, just knot the yarn around a skewer to secure it, and tie the new colour to the next skewer. Keep going until you’re happy. Lovely idea from @estherbabyccino #conkers #babyccinocrafts #babyccinokids
