WEEKEND GETAWAYS
Weekend Getaway: Edinburgh
When I visited Edinburgh for the first time it was in the middle of February. It was cold and dark and wet -- but it was so beautiful. The cold and the darkness suited the city and there was always a warm, cosy pub close by if we needed to warm up. I loved it ...

Arcachon - the perfect French beachside holiday
One of my favourite places in the world is the French Atlantic coast around Bordeaux. The food is amazing, the wine is plentiful and delightful ;) and the water is perfect – the waves are powerful enough to make you jump and spin you around, and the temperature is refreshing but not freezing. Basically I ...

Folegandros -- a tiny island on the Greek Cyclades
My friend Pepi, from the stylish, Athens-based boutique Alice on Board, has written a travel post on the Greek islands Sifnos and Serifos for us before, which left me dreaming of romantic white villages, beautiful sandy beaches and a sea as blue as sapphires. And made me adamant to plan a family visit to Greece soon! Pepi has written another island review for ...

Positano, Italy: Family-friendly Tips and Recommendations
Positano is a very special place for my family. Michael and I made our first visit to Positano in May 2004, back before we had started our family, and on that first trip we made a promise that we would try to come back every year for as long as we could. We returned the ...

A week in Campania, Italy
Our school had scheduled an extra week of vacation in the month of June this year, which was such a welcomed treat! I loved that extra week -- still mid-season and therefore not too busy and less expensive to travel, and summery enough to fly to the south of Europe for a sunny destination. I had once ...

Photoshoot in Amsterdam by Christina Schumacher
A few weeks ago, now that Courtney is back in our hemisphere, we all met up in Amsterdam and had two days of meetings, brain storming, dinners and laughs. I really do love these girls! We now know each other so well that we truly are family and, as we are all such strong characters, ...

Sri Lanka: Where to Stay
Before returning to Europe at the end of May, we spent nearly a month exploring the beautiful country of Sri Lanka. It was our first time visiting, and we enjoyed getting to know the island, its happy people, its many cultures and customs, and, of course, the delicious food! We have never been to India, but ...

Weekend Getaway: Minneapolis
After the recent interview with Jen from Polka Dot Club, in which she shared photos of her beautiful home and described her little city with such passion, we thought it would be fun to ask her to write down her favourite things to do, eat, and see in her home town. I've never been to Minneapolis, but her ...

A week in St. Ives, Cornwall
The pretty fishing town of St Ives in Cornwall is somewhere I’ve grown up holidaying since I was a small child. It holds so many special memories of long, lazy summer vacations spent with family - cousins, aunties, uncles even school friends. And it’s a place that my kids call home even though we actually ...

Why I like camping
When I mention camping to a lot of my friends, they look aghast. The idea of sleeping on the ground, in a tiny tent on top of each other without privacy and at the mercy of the elements, does not sound like a relaxing holiday. To a certain extent they are right; waking up ...

Feather Down Farms: a weekend stay on a farm
A couple of weeks back, we picked up the children from school on a Friday afternoon and drove all the way to the very south of Belgium. Reason for our trip was a weekend stay at a Feather Down farm, or in other words, we were going 'glamping' on a real working farm. Feather Down is a concept that originated in ...

One week in Tokyo: A re-cap of our time in this mega-city!
After spending one month in laid-back Byron Bay, we gave ourselves a bit of culture shock by flying straight into the mega city of Tokyo! After a bit of a rough travel day (bumpy flight, sick children, long queues in airports and a taxi too small to fit all of our luggage!), we arrived to a little ...

Le Jardin des Plantes - Paris
Paris can get pretty wet and cold in the winter and sometimes it is nice to be able to seek refuge inside. One of our favourite city adventures in the winter time is a visit to the Jardin des Plantes. It is one of Paris' largest parks (which does not mean a lot ;)) and also ...

A weekend in Marseille
Living in continental Europe has the distinct advantage that our next adventure is probably only a few hours away by train. A few days in Rio de Janeiro

How do you make getting out of the door with all the kids dressed and all the backpacks easy? fun? stress-free? (and some days shout free?) ... @estherbabyccino ‘s adopted 3 minute music trick! At 8AM their Sonos music system automatically starts playing a song. When that happens, all family members know it’s drill time: they have exactly 3 minutes (or however long the song lasts) to make sure they are ready in the hallway, coats on, shoes on, school and gym bags ready, etc. How clever (and fun!) is that? Imagine their family, dancing and singing and happily getting ready in the morning, laughing while making sure to be ready before the song ends! All family members get to choose their favourite song one day of the week. Apparently it is possible to program specific music at specific times in the Sonos system, so for instance on Monday at 8AM dad’s song of choice sounds through the house, on Tuesday it’s the daughter’s favourite song, etc. More in our bio. #babyccinokids #parenthacks

What are your thoughts on this archive post... “boredom spawns creativity and self-sufficiency, and that it’s important for children to accept that life isn’t always a ‘parade of amusements’.
