Greecologies - a yogurt bar in Little Italy
It's not hard at all to find Greek yogurt in most groceries and bodegas in New York, but for something a bit more special and unique, Greecologies, a yogurt lab and café in Little Italy, provides a perfect place to stop for breakfast or a mid-day snack. The shop's signature offering is traditional small-batch Greek ...

Untermyer Park and Gardens
It's no secret that as a family we like spending time in parks, gardens, and green spaces - it helps to balance out our city living, I suppose - and I've written about some of our favorite places previously in posts about Wave Hill, Brooklyn Botanic Garden, and Storm King Art Center. We recently made ...

Books Are Magic
A neighborhood bookstore is so much more than simply a place to purchase books, don't you think? As a local, a bookstore's a place to be home without being home, a second living room, a place to gather, relax, mingle and watch your children dive headfirst into the magical worlds only books reveal. As a ...

Sailing model boats on Conservatory Water in Central Park
My daughter began attending preschool earlier this fall, and to help celebrate this milestone I took her for a special outing on one of the last days before the school year started. She had admired the model boats sailing on Conservatory Water during past trips to Central Park, so we decided to try our hand ...

Wave Hill -- a public garden and cultural center
We're lucky in New York to have a number of lovely botanical gardens to visit. We often stop by one of our favorites, Brooklyn Botanic Garden, as it's closest to our home, but this past weekend we decided to do something a bit different and traveled to the Riverdale neighborhood of the Bronx to visit ...

Teardrop Park in Battery Park City
I included Teardrop Park in Battery Park City in my list of favorite places to take a break around town, but a repeat visit this past weekend made me eager to share more about why I think it's such a fantastic little park. Filling the space created between four tall residential towers, the park offers ...

VHH Foods -- an all-day eatery in Brooklyn
We returned to Brooklyn on Sunday after a week and a half away and faced sights familiar, I'm sure, to many families upon return from travel: an empty refrigerator, a mountain of luggage needing unpacking, and tired-looking faces all around. In the name of making sure everyone turned in for the night with full bellies ...

Dumbo Baby, a children's boutique in Brooklyn
Dumbo Baby is a lovely new children's boutique in Dumbo Brooklyn, adding to the list of reasons (Jane's Carousel and Brooklyn Bridge Park chief among them!) that this neighborhood makes for a perfect family outing. The boutique is a brick-and-mortar home for A Gifted Baby and Galileo Linens, both members of the shopping portal, and ...

Swedish Cottage Marionette Theater
Nestled near the west side of Central Park, not far from the American Museum of Natural History and Belvedere Castle, sits a little wooden cottage. Scandinavian in design, it has high arched windows framed with beautifully carved elements, and wood weathered from seeing the turn of 140 New York summers and winters. Imported from Sweden ...

Belvedere Castle, Central Park
The most challenging part of a visit to Central Park might be deciding how you want to spend your time. Beyond the green space visible from the park's perimeters -- the shaded walkways, expansive lawns, rock outcroppings, and lakes -- Central Park provides space for a number of family-friendly attractions and diversions. The carefully architected ...

American Museum of Natural History
Many of New York's most famous museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, line the east side of Central Park along 5th Avenue, a stretch often referred to as Museum Mile. But crossing the park to Manhattan's Upper West Side to visit the American Museum of Natural History is a high ...

CW Pencil Enterprise
I love New York for many reasons, but the existence of specialized shops like CW Pencil Enterprise -- an entire store devoted to  pencils (!) - ranks high on the list. I'm by no means a pencil expert, but the selection here seems near-encyclopedic, and with a budding little writer on my hands it was ...

Il Laboratorio del Gelato
I've mentioned before that we're an ice cream-loving family, so much so that we've identified our go-to favorite ice cream spots in neighborhoods across the city for quick reference should we happen to be in the general vicinity. Il Laboratorio del Gelato tops that list when we happen to be on the Lower East Side or ...

Metropolitan Museum of Art
There's a reason the Metropolitan Museum of Art is world-renowned: its collection is encyclopedic and breathtaking, filled with recognizable masterpieces but also with works that expose you to artists or art forms you might know less intimately. It's an ideal place to start building an appreciation for art and art history in young children, and a range of family-focused ...

Silver Towers Playground/Tom Otterness Playground
Last week as I watched the streetscape speed by out the window of a taxi on my way to work, I happened to spot what looked like one of the most amazing play structures I had ever seen tucked into a small public park between two buildings on 42nd Street. A quick Google search revealed that ...

Minetta Playground
New York has plenty of destination-worthy playgrounds and public spaces, but I find myself continually thankful for the existence of the smaller neighborhood playgrounds, one or more of which can nearly always be found in areas we like to frequent for meals, shopping and entertainment, making them convenient places to stop and burn off a bit of energy. Welcome to our newest #babyccinokidsboutiques on the block! Eco conscious clothing and decor for adventurous kids … Bella + Phoenix! Brand @bella_and_phoenix is created by Debbie Turrell a Sussex based graphic designer/illustrator and mum. From a young age both her children showed an avid interest in the natural world. From rock pooling to finding mini beasties in the back garden, everything would be inspected (not dissected!) and then avidly talked about. Next would come the barrage of questions! It inspired her to come up with the 'Tee of Knowledge’. The clothing is organized into cute themes and children will definitely feel inspired when they are dressed and ready for an afternoon spent amongst nature! Being passionate about ethical production, all the clothing is handprinted to order in Bella and Phoenix Sussex studio on organic cottons, using eco friendly inks. The packaging is recycled and 100% biodegradable too. We hope your little explorers will be inspired!
