Let’s go on a wellbeing journey together…

When was the last time that you made time for yourself?  Time to do something that you love doing, to forget the day and lose yourself in something for a few moments – through exercise, a relaxing cup of tea or even just simply watching the clouds or noticing a beautiful flower or small detail.  As parents, we are often all too busy prioritising others and leave little time for ourselves and our own wellbeing.  As Lara put it in her blog on Rest – is it a focus in your family? We often make sure our babies and toddlers have blissful naps and cosy sleeps, but don’t indulge in the same for ourselves.

Personally, in my own life, I’m often guilting of this, swept along with the immediacy of life as a parent.  Homework, after school shuttling, holiday planning, crafts and activities, sports, playdates, birthday cards and presents to buy. It’s all too easy to lose sight of myself and my own needs. I tell myself that it’s just ‘family life’ and that there will be plenty of time to learn something new, read those books and catch up on sleep when the children have flown the nest, but the reality is that I’m missing out and making it harder for myself – physically and mentally.

You see, in order to be fully supportive and present for others, we need to take care of ourselves and build ourselves up to be mentally and physically ready. This might be 10 minutes at the end of the day with a good book, a 30 mins swim, dancing around the kitchen, preparing healthy snacks to eat on the go, it is so important to take time to look after ourselves as well as others. For me, it’s escaping to listen to a great song turned up loud, running a bath and getting lost in a good book or just going for a quick run – definitely something that I need to make more time for!  Not only does it make me feel good, it also gives me some headspace and more importantly, it’s just a lot of fun.

Over the next week we will be exploring the importance of wellbeing not only physically, emotionally and spiritually but also ultimately in terms of becoming positive role models for our children.  By prioritising our own wellbeing and health, we are teaching the importance of self-care.

Sounds simple in theory, but how easy is it in reality?  That’s where we come in…
