‘Sustainable Home’ – a great starting point for living sustainably

Since having my children, I’ve become a lot more focused on living life in a sustainable way. I am more conscious than ever of the way I live, the way I shop and the way I consume.  Mindful especially of how my these things doing affects the planet which my children and theirs stand to inherit.

The state of the natural world is scary and the effects of our living undeniable. But at times, putting it all right seems an insurmountable task.

Sir David Attenborough broke a world record with his joining of Instagram reaching millions last month. He warned in his first ever video, “continents are on fire. Glaciers are melting. Coral reefs are dying. Fish are disappearing from our oceans. The list goes on.”

And yes I recycle, I reinvent leftovers, I refrain from impulse shopping, but I know that there is so much more I can be doing.

It’s for this reason I was so happy to find ‘Sustainable Home’ by Christine Liu. It is a comprehensive and practical guide to environmental living, centred around the place I believe all lasting change must begin, the home.

The Sustainable Home is divided up into the various spaces of your home, the living area, kitchen, bedroom and bathroom, and there are 18 step by step projects to inspire, from making your own body butter, to pickling your veg to a recipe for a delicious one pot lentil curry.

In Christine’s true minimalist fashion, the book is clear and concise, though leaves you inspired and with lot of everyday information on how to lead a lower impact lifestyle.

I’ve found the section on ‘Preparing for a package – free grocery trip’ hugely helpful.  There is also a brilliant ‘make your own herb garden’ step by step.

If you too are looking for more tangible ways to live sustainably, I’d urge you to get yourself a copy of this book.  You can also follow Christine Lui on Instagram here, to keep up with her day to day prescriptions.

As always, I’d love to hear some of the ways you are living sustainably, so please do share them!
