Manhattan Beach Strand and Roundhouse Pier Aquarium

Manhattan Beach is located at the southern end of Los Angeles County along the Pacific Ocean, and is a bustling town perched on a hillside. Along with Hermosa Beach and Redondo Beach, Manhattan Beach makes up the South Bay Area of Los Angeles. It’s a hotspot for beach volleyball and surfing, and well-known for its wide open sandy beaches.

The Manhattan Beach pier is another attraction, with it’s octagonal shaped building at the end, which houses the Roundhouse Aquarium. The pier also features the “Volleyball Hall of Fame” with plaques dedicated to past winners of the annual Manhattan Beach Open volleyball tournament. The pier is very popular with locals, tourists and photographers alike. You get a great vantage point of the coastline, and it’s lovely to watch the sunsets from the pier all year round.

The Roundhouse Marine Studies Lab and Aquarium at the end of the pier is free to the public, but they appreciate donations. The interior of the aquarium was just remodeled in 2018 and includes a shark tank, a tide pool touch tank with animals common to Southern California, tanks with lobsters, and baby sharks as well as brightly colored, non-native fish and invertebrates.

If you are spending a day or part of a day in Manhattan Beach we recommend walking, scooting, roller skating or biking the Strand along the beach. It’s several miles long, and spans to either side of the pier along the beach. You are slightly elevated and passing right in front of local homes facing the beach, some of the most interesting properties along the Los Angeles coast line. If you are up for a grand tour, there is a bike path / beach board walk all the way from Santa Monica to Redondo Beach, which is 22 miles long. It’s a concrete path and runs through the sand, just below the Strand in Manhattan Beach (as seen on the image above).

Manhattan Beach is also very well known for dining and shopping. The Main Street runs perpendicular to the beach and ends at the Manhattan Beach Pier.
