A paper doll chain — a simple paper cutting craft for all ages

paper doll chain

Making a paper doll chain is a craft I remember enjoying as a child with my mother. It’s a fun one because it goes fast and is great entertainment for different ages. It can be as easy or complex as you want, and unfolding the chain is always a moment of magic!

All you need are a pair of scissors and paper. We used A3 paper cut in 3 strips (approximately 10 x 40 cm, or 4″ x 16″) , but you can also recycle newspapers, magazines, etc. Now fold the strip of paper in a harmonica way as shown in the images below.

There are two ways to make the design: you can either draw one figure, which will give you the possibility to create asymmetrical dolls ‘facing one another’ (like the ballerina below). Or you can design two different ‘forward facing’ dolls (like the gentleman and the lady). Make sure the dolls are holding hands to create a chain!

Try to experiment with different ideas and designs. The finished paper chain make great window decor (and for this lock down period, this ‘Let’s stay at home‘ from Flow letter chain is fun to hang in between!).

Have fun! And do share the results with us :).

When we do this we also read the book “The Paper Dolls” by Julia Donaldson (of The Gruffalo fame) with illustrations by Rebecca Cobb. It’s lovely (although I always cry).
