CHRISTMAS CRAFTS

LOLA art boxes, the fabulous Holiday Edition!

LOLA art boxes

LOLA Art Boxes are the most wonderful way to introduce creativity in your family. Every month, the talented LOLA (short for Lots of Lovely Art) team assembles everything you need to create three artist-inspired projects, including an introduction to the artist, recommendations on books or artworks to discover and galleries to visit, plus of course ALL the high quality materials you need to make a true masterpiece.

‘Every child is an artist’, Pablo Picasso said, and this month, LOLA’s beautiful Christmas craft box is inspired by the art of this genius artist. One of the first to group unrelated objects together and incorporate them into his work, Picasso managed to create powerful installations. This technique of ‘assemblage’ is looked at in this month’s special edition LOLA holiday box, and we are going to make a beautiful reindeer head!

Education is important to Lots of Lovely Art, and an introduction to the artist(s) is always the starting point before getting to work. Some books are suggested and masterpieces are mentioned so the child is introduced to the broader picture of creativity — I love this aspect of the LOLA art boxes! And then the project is lined out in a way which is simple and clear, so children know exactly what steps to follow and do not get discouraged by tasks which appear to be too daunting. The process is important — it is about creativity and fun, and above all, it should be doable. But there is enough room for imagination and exploration — things can be interpreted in different ways and this is only encouraged.

To make the reindeer head, we are cutting the cardboard LOLA craft box in pieces and re-assemble the pieces back together. Then we are working with ‘found’ objects (interesting pieces of rubbish!) and bright paint colours to become part of the sculpture and create a unique reindeer personality. Very clear instructions guide the child through the proces, and it is so much fun!

Ava loved this craft project so much, and a subscription to LOLA art boxes is number one on her wishlist for Christmas. Which is such a good idea! You can buy the one-off boxes, but also choose to get one delivered to you every month (or two months). There are boxes for children aged 6 plus, but also ones that are perfect for smaller children (3+). The craft ideas are always original and clever, the materials are of great quality, and every detail is thought of and included. These boxes are a great gift!

If you are in London for The ShopUp in two weeks, you can meet the LOLA team personally and check out their amazing boxes in person. They will be there both days!!
