Strawberry Picking at Tanaka Farms in Irvine

One of the many great things about living in California is that delicious fruits, vegetables, nuts, avocados and olives grow in abundance in this sunny state. There are large farms throughout the state that produce these delicacies for the rest of the nation and world.  We are lucky to have access to a smaller more local farm just an hour south of Los Angeles (by car). Tanaka Farms is located in Irvine (Orange County), which is also the home of UCI, the University of California, Irvine.

Tanaka Farms is a family owned and run farm and business. It started actually in Japan! The great-grandfather of the family immigrated to California from Japan, and now his son, wife and grandson run the 30-acre produce and vegetable farm. They grow over 40 types of fruits and vegetables, and seasonally offer Strawberry Tours from March through June, Melon Tours and Corn Picking Tours July through August. The Pumpkin Patch is from September to October and a Holiday Tour is in December. To learn more about their farm tours, check here!

We participated in the strawberry picking tour this visit! They take you on a tractor trailer for a ride around the farm and stop at different crops to let you taste test the various in-season fruits and vegetables. We tried snap peas, celery and carrots. Along the way to the strawberry crop they educated us on the history of the farm and their responsible farming methods. The last stop on the tour was the strawberry fields, where we got out, picked and ate strawberries. Such a treat!

After strawberry picking, the kids played in their play area, we visited the farm stand to pick up more produce and baked goods and ate a little picnic lunch at one of the shaded picnic areas. Our bellies full and our skin sun-kissed, we left feeling so much more educated and connected to the basics of farming and where our delicious food comes from.
