Ivy received a copy of Withering-by-Sea by Judith Rossell in her Christmas stocking this year, and she loved it so much, we had to quickly run back to the bookstore to buy the next two books in the series. She tells me these are her new favourite books, so I just knew I had to share them here with you.
‘Withering-by-Sea’ is followed by the sequel, Wormwood Mire, and then by the third and final adventure in the award-winning series, Wakestone Hall. The series features the adventures of an 11-year-old orphan, Stella Montgomery, who lives with her dreadful aunts. Ivy was so glued to the books, she devoured each book in a day and told me she was so sad when she finished the third one. At one point over the Christmas holidays, I took the kids for ice cream, and while the other kids were queuing for ice cream, I looked over and found Ivy sitting at a table completely immersed in the story. Books over ice cream! You know it must be a good book when that’s the choice. : )
I’d say these books would be great for young readers in the 7-10 year age range, depending on reading ability.

These look great, thanks! Ava would love them xx
This is absolutely perfect Courtney. I’ll buy them for my 9 year old. She hasn’t found a book or series yet that gets her engrossed in reading. This might be the ticket.
Thank you for sharing. This series was available at my local library – what luck!
This post is a couple of years old now but wanted to leave a comment to say how much my 9 year old enjoyed these books. They are beautifully written and the illustrations are just stunning. Thank you Courtney for sharing them. I would love to hear what else Ivy has been reading recently, would you consider a review of books for children 9 upwards?
Thanks for this feedback, Louise. Yes, I’ll try to share a post soon with Ivy’s recent favourite books. xx
Thank you Courtney! After writing, I found your ‘at home’ highlight which detailed some books that Ivy had enjoyed and I went and ordered a couple of those. But any more recommendations are always welcome! Thank you! I hope the rain has stopped – Australia seemed to be on the receiving end of some very heavy rain over the weekend? x
