St. Eval, Cornwall for Christmas or a wonderful Weekend Getaway

We are big fans of places in the UK where we can just hop on a train, be swept away from the Big Smoke and instantly transported into nature! And Cornwall is one of those transformative places, simply stunning and much easier to travel to on a train from London than most would think. In just a few hours you are in one of the UK’s prettiest places. Just book in advance, and get a car on the other end. Simple! And on your train journey, you will be entertained by beautiful coastal views to get you in the holiday mood too.

We booked our train tickets (we are not a big car journey family due to motion sickness), and decided to make St. Eval in Cornwall our home-away-from-home for Christmas, and it did not disappoint! Fortunately we stayed in the loveliest place, a former Sheepfold, which was specifically designed for Cornwall. After an eco-friendly renovation that is. 🙂 It had a great big kitchen for cooking, surrounded by large glass windows which captured the beauty of nature outside — the amazing storms, skies, sunsets, stars, and even rainbows! But we stayed toasty and warm inside without drafts and with a cosy fire since it was highly insulated too. We love smart design!

We fell in love with this area of Cornwall, even in the winter months. It has countryside and coastlines, epic beaches, and sweet cafes, gourmet stores, and even a candle making factory! So sweet. We often stayed in pyjamas, then ventured out for walks past farm animals, splashing in puddles, or visiting the endless choices of beaches. We fully enjoyed all of the delicious and gourmet food options, including seafood!  And we even got in the Christmas spirit and made our first-ever mince pies at home!

Yes we also love Cornwall in the summer months (see little Beatrice on the surfboard ages ago!), but we really loved the stillness, the quietness, and the lack of crowds over the Christmas holiday. It was so relaxing. And what more can you ask for over the long and Christmas period?

Details to help you plan your fun getaway:

Stay : Sheepfold, in St.Eval sleeps up to 6 people… and did we mention there is also a climbing frame room? I mean… yes!!! A definite choice of accommodation for kids of all ages!

See : Get coastal and visit the Bedruthan Steps and the nearby family-friendly beaches Mawgan Porth, Porthcothan & Watergate Bay.

Visit the Camel Trail in Padstow, and rent bikes nearby or go for a big hike. It is a lovely hike to do!

Do : Go to the St. Eval Candle Factory, it is so sweet. We love their rose scented candles. And the children enjoy watching them make enormous wax pillar candles. Check hours first, it is a small operation.

The local St.Kernow Chocolate Factory also has tours! Great for a rainy day.

Eat and Shop :

Padstow is such a charming working fishing village! Make sure to spend a few hours there and also eat the best fish and chips at Rick Stein’s spot. Don’t be deterred by the queues, it is worth it.

Hawksfield is a great  for a few hours. You can eat at the amazing Strong Adolfos, buy amazing plants and flowers, find adorable gifts at Jo & Co Home, do yoga, scour for antiques at Goose Shed, purchase speciality and local foods and wines at the gourmet shop BinTwo, and purchase windbreakers and raincoats at an incredible Finisterre outlet.

We also loved Watergate Bay, and especially the kid-friendly Beach Hut.

ps And if you haven’t heard of this little corner of Cornwall, St.Ives is also a beautiful place to get away too. Wonderful things to also see and do!

Enjoy your trip!
