Hotel Rye – A colourful, community-minded stay in Østerbro

Tucked above a charity shop, sitting beside Absalon Kirke and opposite the pretty cake shop Leckerbaer, Hotel Rye is a place whose owners want you to feel more than at home – they want you to feel part of a community. Located on a quiet street off Østerbrogade, one that’s lightly sprinkled with a couple of cafés, a small vintage shop and several independent boutiques, it’s a down-to-earth place that was once an old people’s residence. Its home is an apartment block and in the floors above it live families, with whom the gård  (courtyard) out the back is shared.

The hotel is a quirky place that’s about all being in it together. Currently furnished with vintage mid-century pieces and pops of colour, its living room featuring vinyl to play and a rainbow rack of tourist leaflets, in January 2019 it’s going to get a total makeover from its new owners Claus and Charlotte. They took over the hotel in June 2018 with plans for an interior that will honour its current warm feeling, while mixing Danish and English styles, and featuring wood furniture and floors, and walls covered with beautiful wallpapers and soothing Farrow & Ball colours to freshen it all up. They plan to remove hotel standards in order to amp up the warm, community spirit – the reception will go, dining tables will become communal and there will be touches like home-baked bread. What are currently 17 rooms will become 20.

As it is now, Hotel Rye’s clean bathrooms are shared, and ‘ecological’ breakfast is taken in a little dining room whose walls feature a vintage photograph of John McEnroe and Bjorn Borg, and a huge old map of Denmark.

Hotel Rye is an anomaly because the city’s kommune (council) has ruled that no hotels be built in Østerbro to keep it a residential area. Staying there is special for this aspect, because it’s really about being in a real Copenhagen neighbourhood that many tourists will never see. It backs on to Trianglen, where a Metro station is months from being opened. Right here is Remisen, a free indoor play space complete with a whole room of LEGO and a climbing frame and pirate ship for playing on, and just across Blegdamsvej is Fælledparken, a huge local park filled with wide, open spaces and small, brilliantly designed playgrounds.
