Danish Strawberries and Podded Peas – Summer’s sweetest natural snacks

Come June, there are two Danish snacks that it’s imperative you know about as a visitor to Copenhagen: the Danish strawberry and the Danish podded pea. All over the city, little stands pop up selling one or both, and with their arrival, the supermarket vegetable sections become noticeably sweeter.

Danish strawberries are, a little like French ones (but better), insanely and addictively sweet. This is because they grow over a longer, less intensely hot season than say those from Spain, and because they grow over long days where the sun sets well beyond 1opm and the temperature changes throughout the day. This allows their flavour to become intense. Additionally, Denmark grows softer strawberry varieties because its fruit doesn’t have to travel long distances – it’s a little country with a little population, after all.

Danish podded peas were something I strongly associate with summers spent in Denmark as a child. Like the humble banana, they’re a snack that comes in it is own packaging – natural, hygienic and easy to eat on the go. Danes fill bowls with them and they’re eaten raw, straight from the pod. They’re filling and FULL of nutrients, and I’ve somehow never found a pea – podded or otherwise – as sweet anywhere else.

This season, from June into July, might be a short (but sweet) one, but it’s definitely something to write home about!
