Travel Town in Griffith Park

Do you have a kid who is obsessed or fascinated with choo choo trains? Then its time to explore the trains at the Travel Town Museum with your little ones. The museum is located on a 9-acre site in Griffith Park and is open to the public every day of the year except Christmas Day.

The museum was founded in 1952 with the idea in mind that youngsters had never been inside a fighter airplane cockpit or gotten a chance to see up close the myriad of controls and gauges inside trains etc. This was at a time when the government was disposing of large amounts of war material. Bill Frederickson was the wonderful man behind the realization of this museum, and to this day (65 years later) the museum is still open to the public every day and free of charge.

There are large locomotives and a fighter plane, which kids (and their parents) are allowed to go inside of. So cool! Inside the museum itself there are other vintage vehicles on display, like a one-horse shay and old firetruck. There is a children’s play area as well, but a tip: you need to rent or bring your own little trains for the Brio tracks to play with. Lets face it, kids don’t always like to share their own toys and how do you tell your kid that there is no “wait your turn” in this scenario if you didn’t know to bring your own?

It’s so rare to get a chance to examine such old vehicles closeup! After looking, running, climbing and seeing all that there is to discover at the Travel Town, don’t forget to check out the Travel Town gift shop – its a treasure trove of wooden tracks and train toys, not to mention books and other gear related to trains and vehicles. I’m talking to you, train enthusiast!

The Miniature Train Ride, which rides around the museum grounds for less than $3, is the cherry on top and (obviously!) a huge hit with children. Don’t skip it!
