5 Questions with Sara Giese Camre from Cam Cam Copenhagen

Lots of small businesses are created and run by solid teams of two. Often friends, sometimes family. Occasionally, even, partners in life! Surely the tightest of teams, business partners who also share parenting, and pretty much everything else in life, have a very special bond. We find this quite fascinating, we must admit!

Cam Cam Copenhagen is run by wife and husband, Sara and Robert. Worthy winners of the 2018 Babyccino Award for Best Decor, we thought it would be interesting to find out how their business pairing works for their family, to learn more of their story, and to share more about this beautiful brand. They also happen to be architects, something else we love at Babyccino! They kindly agreed to answer our 5 Questions.

1. Please tell us a little bit about yourselves, where you live and about your family.

We are a Danish-American married couple who run our own business together. Robert is from Seattle, he came to Denmark to study architecture originally and ended up staying here in Copenhagen. I’m from Copenhagen, also an architect, and a chocolate addict. We have two kids together, Olivia, who is 7 years old, and Elliot, who’s 1. Rob has two older children from his first marriage, who are 12 and 18.

We live in an old house with a very small garden in Copenhagen. We converted it completely in 2015. The construction of our own house was the most fun building process we’ve ever experienced.

2. Tell us a little bit about your brand and how you came to create your label.

I founded Cam Cam Copenhagen in 2012, while on maternity leave with our first child. Being an architect, I was ready to start decorating the perfect nursery for our daughter, in keeping with the rest of our home. However, I had trouble finding quality products that harmonised with our style.

So, I began purchasing fabrics from abroad, from Liberty of London, from Japan, and other places, and started sewing. Soon my friends became interested, and I thought there might be a market for it. I also wanted to find organic products, but couldn’t really find any organic options for babies on the market back then. Perhaps there were more parents who felt the same?

I started slowly, since I had a successful career as an architect and was reluctant to say goodbye to that all at once.

3. What is important to you when designing your products?

We aim to create contemporary products with a reference to classical design. Our design has to be original, meaning it is our unique idea, but at the same time it should have a degree of familiarity — maybe it reminds you of something from your own childhood. The feeling of familiarity arises through classical references.

One of the main reasons I started the company was that I missed organic products for my own daughter. At the time we had been eating organic food for a couple of decades here in Denmark. But, when it came to babycare essentials, I couldn’t really find what I needed for my baby. I thought about how important it was that the bedding, swaddles, really everything she was in constant contact with – often for hours at a time – should be organic and free of chemicals and toxins.

I also try to create design that will last a lot longer than one season, to transcend and help tackle the current “throwaway” culture. The lifecycle of a product is very important, and we aim to develop products that can have a second life – a new function – once the original purpose is outlived. Like our changing table, for instance, which can be turned into a beautiful cabinet for the home once the baby phase is over.

4. What is your current favourite product in your collection?

Right now it’s our changing table. First of all, it’s really beautiful and it seems to appeal to a lot of different types of people. It has become so popular and our customers style it in the most surprisingly different ways. Secondly, it has exactly what I was referring to previously; it has classical references but a contemporary look, and it has a very long life cycle. It works just as well as a cabinet in the living room or the hallway, and who doesn’t need a cabinet?

5. You are partners in life as well as business. How do you manage work and family life?

We have more time with our children now than when we worked as architects. One of us usually leaves the office at 3:30 to pick up the kids. Then, we might turn the computer on again at night once they are asleep. That said, of course there can be days with long meetings, and we do have a live-in house help, as well as a very dedicated grandmother who helps when needed. Robert and I either work or spend time with the kids, there’s no time for seeing friends on weekdays.
