If I am being perfectly honest, I probably visit Passarito, a Portuguese cave à vin in the 11th arrondissement, way too often. Full disclosure: it is almost a stone’s throw from my apartment. Putting the convenience aside, I have even better reasons for my frequent visits.  As a serious design lover, I want to be surrounded by beautiful things, but as a work-from-home-slash-cafe mom I usually have to drag a child or two with me to meet-ups. I am also perpetually hungry so the food or the nibbles need to satisfy my cravings. At Passarito all of these disparate desires completely collide for me, which is why it is always high on my list of recs.

César De Sousa opened this spot early in 2016 with a love of family, his Portuguese, and adopted French culture in mind. The decor is simple yet chic with the blue and white tiles and fabric from Portugal and antiques collected from brocantes. I love that there are different charcuterie and cheese platters, which is nice when you have friends visiting that request something local and more traditional. You can share a simple plate and sip on a glass (or bottle) from the extensive list of wines from Portugal and France. I have also been known to pop in after lunch for a tea served in delicately beautiful antique teapots and cups only to find myself having a second lunch because I can’t resist the daily specials. De Sousa prepares recipes slowly cooked for hours, that smell absolutely divine, such as bourguignons, soups, and braised meats in broths with salads and vegetables. (His blanquette de veau is heaven!) And la piece de la resistance is the cute and clean (!!) playroom that my daughter adores. There are four sweet little parakeets behind a glass wall and the room is full of toys, books, paper and coloring pencils to keep her occupied while I do my thing. It is also incredibly wonderful that De Sousa and his staff really like children and are not bothered by the kids roaming (sometimes running) in and out of the play area. (This is an important point for me because there are “kid-friendly” restaurants out there that aren’t so friendly to the kids, if you know what I mean.)  The menu offers the little ones ouef à la coque with buttered peas and the owner has been known to whip up special desserts and distribute them in the playroom.

While this has been one of my “go-to” spots since they opened, it has become very popular lately and I highly recommend booking a table in advance for the evenings or Saturday lunch.

Enjoy! xx, Ajiri
