A trip to Morocco — in the Amsterdam Tropenmuseum!

We just came back from a trip to Morocco — and it only took us a few hours! We went to the beautiful Tropenmuseum here in Amsterdam, where we boarded a plane to Marrakesh and entered a medina of little streets and rooms to discover.

Before the departure of the ‘plane’, the children were handed a Moroccan passport with questions and assignments aimed to give direction to the interactive ‘Ziezo Marokko’ exhibition. There are four tours to be discovered, ‘guided’ by Esmaa, Fatima, Nasrdin or Yousef, who take you by the hand to discover the land of their parents. According to true Moroccan fashion, guests are welcomed with a glass of the traditional, sweet mint tea before they are left to explore the Medina by themselves.

The exhibition explores Moroccan culture like architecture, music, religion, scripture, dress, food and arts and crafts. It’s an excellent way to show children some of this amazing country. (Our visit to Morocco a few years ago was one of our favourite trips ever!)

In the main hall of the Tropenmuseum children can work on a gigantic mosaic puzzle (which my kids loved!) and on selected days in the Christmas vacation there’s henna tattooing and Moroccan style photography. Check the website for details — it’s such a fun outing during the holidays!

PS All the tours are in Dutch, but I feel that with some knowledge of Moroccan culture, or if you’ve been to Morocco before, parents can easily take non-Dutch speaking children around to give them a taste of this beautiful country.
