Florence is feeling so grown up! She has her own first little chapter book and there is so much excitement in the house! She carries it everywhere with her and I even overheard her recommending it the other day to her friends at the swimming pool! I came across these little series of books when I was googling Maurice Sendak, who is my favourite children’s illustrator. We love his Nutshell Library set which Courtney wrote about here a while back and wanted to add a few more of his books to our collection.
In this particular book, which is the first in a series of five, there are four chapters : What Will Bear Wear? Birthday Soup, Little Bear Goes to the Moon and Little Bear’s Wish. We have read the book so regularly now that Florence can recite the stories perfectly. And we’ve all fallen madly in love with Little Bear and his enchanting adventures that I went straight online to order a few more.
Sendak’s illustrations are true to his form; cosy, warm and old-fashioned. Paired with Minarik’s delightful stories these books are little gems.
Little Bear is a wonderful nostalgic collection of stories perfect for children of all ages. You will find the whole series available on amazon (US) or (UK).

I always love your beautiful photos, besides the books 🙂
I too love Little Bear’s stories. By the way, for your French readers, these are also available in French.
This series look so cute! x
We love these books! The humour is the best!
I love these books and once found one in a yard sale for 50 cents, when I got home and opened it I discovered it had been signed!! (He lived near me, in Ridgefield CT and I assume had maybe signed this at a local library event or book signing!) I also love the cartoon little bear. It’s so gentle and sweet. Beautiful music.
I have always loved these books, and when I was younger Little Bear was my favorite TV show (based on the books – you should check it out!)
The Little Bear books are so wonderful – a favourite in our home! My four year old daughter also loves listening to the audio collection which is gently and perfectly narrated by Sigourney Weaver.
If you like “Little Bear” try “A Kiss for Little Bear.” It’s even sweeter. Also in the same vein, check out the “Frog and Toad” series.
