Artis, an old and beautiful Zoo

DSC03337

One of the oldest zoos in Europe, Artis Royal Zoo was opened in 1851 and has a very beautiful setting, with stunning gardens, monumental 19th century buildings and it is right in the centre of the city. What’s particularly special about Artis is that many of the animal enclosures are actually integrated and housed within the historic architecture — making it quite the visual spectacle and a  truly unique experience.

The main restaurant at Artis is situated across from the giraffe and zebra enclosure, so you can sit down to lunch while watching the animals — and your backdrop is the beautiful Amsterdam canals. The restaurant offers a broad selection of food and drink and is also equipped with high chairs as well as baby changing and feeding facilities. Just outside the restaurant is a large playground that children of all ages can enjoy, and there are also a couple of smaller playgrounds in other parts of the zoo.

During the Summer months Artis stays open until sunset on Saturday evenings, so you can stay late and enjoy some live music, pizza from the outdoor kitchen and locally brewed beers – or you can bring along your own picnic if you prefer. Also in the Spring and Summer you can enjoy fresh and delicious poffertjes (Dutch mini pancakes) from the ‘Polderhuis’ cafe, which has a large terrace overlooking a bird enclosure and is right beside the small petting zoo.

On our recent visit to Amsterdam I took my girls to the Zoo and we absolutely LOVED it. Unlike other zoo’s you feel like you can get right up close to the animals – they are not all caged in and hidden away. We were absolutely amazed by the giraffes!!!! Stunning. We also loved the restaurant and the fact that they had soft serve ice cream as a treat.
