Behind an unassuming sliver of storefront on Thompson Street is Makié, a shop carrying a range of gorgeous children’s clothing as well as select pieces of womenswear and small home goods. The vision of designer Makié Yahagi, the pieces pair a restrained and sophisticated color palette with classic designs and a very minimalist Japanese aesthetic. Makié’s own line is produced here in the US with natural fabrics – beautiful cotton, linen, and wool – sourced from around the globe (including Liberty fabrics). The shop carries a curated selection of goods from other complimentary companies, including shoes from Pèpè and accessories from Atsuyo et Akiko.
I first learned of Makié while pregnant with my daughter, and was instantly attracted to the understated elegance and simplicity of the line. My daughter came home from the hospital in an ivory terry hadagi, which was then worn often in those first weeks. The snaps and ties of the soft kimono-style piece helped alleviate some of the nerves that accompanied dressing her tiny frame, and the neutral color was perfect – a newborn doesn’t need much in the way of adornment, after all. I’ve since turned to Makié for summer dresses, bloomers, and blouses, and have always been impressed with the range of options available for boys. For those unable to visit the store in New York the website is an appealing – and tempting – alternative. Happy shopping!
