OddFellows Ice Cream Co.

I would argue that while it’s important to have a favorite ice cream place, it’s perhaps even more important to have a favorite ice cream place in as many neighborhoods as possible. Weekend socializing, errands, and exploring often take us out of our immediate corner of the city, and I like feeling secure in my knowledge of where we might stop for ice cream should the mood strike. (The mood always strikes). OddFellows Ice Cream Co. is our go-to in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Sometimes it’s the reason we go to Williamsburg!

The selection of flavors at OddFellows changes constantly but always seems to include at least one sorbet and at least one ice cream flavor that appears unconventional enough in name only to leave me pondering how its disparate components will pull together. I should know better by now than to worry, though: saffron passionfruit and miso cherry, both offered this past weekend, were delicious, and my toddler daughter polished off her lime tarragon sorbet without any of the help I was more than ready to offer.

The shop in Williamsburg offers milkshakes, sundaes, and classic banana splits in addition to cups and cones. A second shop, opened nearly two years ago in Manhattan’s East Village, offers artisanal ice cream sandwiches and “OddPockets,” a variation that toasts brioche bread stuffed with ice cream in a panini press. We still haven’t made it to the East Village shop, but I love knowing it’s there, ready for us to try the next time we’re in the neighborhood!
