Jane’s Carousel

When the last email of the work week has been sent, we often make our way to Brooklyn Bridge Park and Jane’s Carousel. Perched on the edge of the East River overlooking the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges and all of Lower Manhattan, Jane’s Carousel has most spectacular setting of any carousel in New York. The carousel, carved in 1922, was first installed in Ohio before its purchase at auction and move to New York in 1984. Now expertly restored, it opened to the public in 2011 housed in a strikingly-modern glass building designed by architect Jean Nouvel. A ride or two is the perfect way to usher in the weekend.

With 48 horses and two chariots to choose from, it often takes us some time to make a selection, but soon enough the bell rings, the organ music starts, and the skyline spins by. Pretty any time of day, I love the view best in the late afternoon, with golden light flooding in as the sun sinks behind the city.

When we’re finished, we stop outside to watch boat traffic on the river and helicopter traffic in the sky. As we head for home, we sometimes stop at Jacques Torres, two blocks away on Water Street, and share either hot chocolate or a chocolate chip cookie ice cream sandwich, depending on the season. Let the weekend begin!
