The Dopper bottle

SONY DSCIn the Netherlands, schools don’t provide a cooked lunch so my children leave the house every day with a backpack with a packed lunch and a bottle of water. Recently, Sara has been complaining about her current water bottle making funny sounds when she drinks, so I’ve been on the lookout for a replacement. And I found it! The Dopper is a Dutch design water bottle, with an ingenious 2-in-1 function of bottle and cup: the cap becomes a cup when you turm it upside down.

The design and idea of the Dopper stems from the growing frustration of the founder of Dopper, Merijn Everaarts, with the enormous amounts of plastic waste (the ‘plastic soup’, floating in the ocean). Merijn organised a design competition and the clever idea of Rinke van Remortel was the rightful winner. The Dopper is produced following the principles of the Cradle to Cradle philosophy and consists of no harmful substances. It can easily be cleaned, and is dishwasher safe.

Also — 10% of Dopper sales goes to the Dopper Foundation, which invests half of its proceeds in water projects in Nepal and the other half goes to water and plastic waste education projects.

An admirable bottle, don’t you think?

Hi Esther,
we have been going through so many bottles in our house and and when throwing another one in the bin I always thought: why is it so difficult to find/design a good water bottle? Until a couple weeks ago I bought this one and we are totally happy with it, it is a good feeling when you finally think you have found THE bottle that you are satisfied with.
Happy weekend!

dear all, I love your blog, I read it everyday and sometimes I even forward to my husband, and yes we have bought so many things that you recommend…we are parents of two little girls (1 and 3) qeestion is, what do you cook for them to take to the school? it s been my nightmare since the beginning, cooking healthy and different for lunch and dinner every day…lucky me we are in Spain for few months and here is so important the diet that the school takes cares of it under a nutritional person selection. but when we move to other places I know is not like this…so any ideas welcome. Thank you very much.

Thank you for your sweet comment!! I’ve been thinking about a post about ideas for the lunch box a long time… But I think there are so many different cultures — in the NL, lunches are cold, and in many other cultures they have to have a hot lunch! (I would be happy to focus on a cold lunch box, but I won’t be of much use for the hot one!)

The best drinking bottles I have found, are the glass lifefactory ones…my 5 and 6 year olds have them for school, and they have a special protective sleeve to prevent any breakages . Even the non bpa bottles have harmful substances in them still, so not only does water taste so much better from glass, they are the much better for the environment , and should last forever! So worth the investment….plus they look fantastic ! I have bought one for myself too…definitely recommended!

Maybe I can try them one day! They sound great! But are they not heavy in the lunch bag?

My kids don’t complain of them being heavy, and they absolutely love them. I got the ones with the straws for the girls, and a flip top for me. They have a really easy handle to carry them with.

Love, love the idea of this. In France the kids often stay in school for gouter and come out at 6pm. My kids are often so thirsty. I have yet to find a good drinking bottle that does not spontaneously open up in their backpack!

ABS (which the Doppler is made from) is also harmful, it seems. It has been found that many BPA-free materials are as harmful or more than normal BPA. More research is need.
I use the lifefactory glass as well. It’s not that heavy… But worth it.

Many of the water bottles available in the market and it’s difficulty to choose one the best water bottle. Many family use stainless steel water bottle. I like your water bottle design and next time I must purchase…..
