Wearing lipstick!

Apart from playing dress-up with my mom’s lipstick when I was little, I have never been a lipstick girl. I tried lip gloss when I was in college, but I could never figure out how to keep my hair from getting stuck in my lips, especially in windy Chicago! (Is there a trick I’m not aware of?) And I’ve always felt that a bold coloured lipstick made my lips look even bigger, making me look a bit clown-like.

So when my friend Joanna from A Cup of Jo asked me to test out some lipsticks for a beauty tutorial on her blog, I laughed her off and told her I don’t look good in lipstick. But she persuaded me to try, and I must say I was pleasantly surprised when I tested them out. There is something about lipstick that makes you feel flirty and fun and can make you look instantly more put-together, even with messy hair and sleepy eyes. : )

The lipstick feature is up on A Cup of Jo. We tested out three different orangey colours. Which one is your favourite? Do you have others to recommend? (I still haven’t bought a lipstick yet so any suggestions you have are welcomed!)

x Courtney

p.s. How pretty is this dress by Ace & Jig?! The dress definitely steals the show.

I love how normal & honest you are Courtney!! Have to say I have the same relationship with lipstick & I’ve always hated my hair sticking in lip gloss which has always made me think I’d look less of a mess without it:). That said, it really does make you feel polished & add a touch of sparkle!! As always, you look fab in these photos, & there is a hint of Hollywood glamour which most definitely suits you!! 🙂 x

You definitely steal the show Courtney! You look beautiful with this bright red lipstick and this green dress! I first saw you on Joanna’s blog, so nice to see a familiar face! Congrats!

You look great! You look like the lead singer of Lake Street Dive in their video “I Want You Back” filmed on a Boston street corner…same lipstick shade! Look it up!

Lovely as always. Might there be an eyebrow tutorial in the future? ::Hint, hint::

Im a fan of the lippie, the colour is gorgeous on you!
I never used to be a fan of lipstick but I have started to wear a matte bright red or orange and I agree a swipe definitely makes you feel more fun!

Well, I think you look great! I know what you mean about lipstick though. I never wear it unless I’m going out in the evening, but because I don’t wear it very often it makes a huge difference when I do.

well, with lips like those I would wear lipstick everyday.

But you rocked the other colours if I must say, seems like red and orangey tones are your colour
Wishing you all the best always

I’m totally on the same page when it comes to lipstick, even though I’m now well in my 30s, I feel like I’m playing ‘dress up’ whenever I try a bright lipstick (basically, anything that’s not nude). However, I am a fan of a good natural, glossy lip balm and I love the way a red lip looks on others. Maybe I just need to find ‘my red’, as you have – that colour looks stunning! And yes, that is a beautiful dress – good find!

I know this feature was about orange lipstick and they are very pretty and on trend but my personal observation (hope you don’t mind me saying) is that you would look great in a nude rose type of colour. Have you tried Bobbi Brown ? They have quite natural, creamy looking shades and are not too heavy. Orange may be going in at the deep end for someone who never wears the stuff. PS, I always find my children are the most (brutally) honest people when I want an opinion!

Wow! You look fab Courtney, just had a look at the different shades you modelled and I think the bold colours work for an evening out/party definitely and that gorgeous costa chic coral lipstick really suits you and could be worn day to day. May have to indulge in some lippy myself. Xx

Hi Courtney, I love that dress too…I have your same colour of hair and eyes and I prefer natural or soft pink lipstick. I think for me it’s better. But I really like you with those orange, you look great! Maybe I will try them!
Have a nice holiday with your beautiful family!

I’m not a lipstick girl (I tried hard and I bought like… 234567890986543 shades I wore 2-3 times before forgetting them in the bath cabinet and then giving them to my happy friends, who rock lipstick as I’ll never do) and I just wear byTerry in Baby Bloom (baby pink, sheer, just a hint of color) and Dior in Grège 1947 (nudey, but not the one that looks washed-out) but staring at these photos I’m considering buying a new orange. (Don’t do it! Don’t do it! Bah…)

I’ve been using Lip Smacker’s Dr. Pepper since I was a teenager! It’s moisturizing and has the faintest hint of color. Lipstick scares me, but you look so lovely! Maybe it’s time to branch out a little? 😉

I wanted to let you know that I think you are SO beautiful! I am so glad I clicked around and wound up at your site. I hope you show up around Cup of Jo more often! 🙂

I can’t believe you don’t wear lipstick regularly! The shades you modeled are so flattering on you. I already bought the apricot gloss from the drugstore and ordered the bright MAC one for a brave day 🙂

I just read the post and you put a smile on my face. I think the lipstick looks fab on you. Red lips and a big happy smile are the best accessories ever… cxx

Pretty pretty pretty! Love you to bits! Xxxxx

You are the prettiest gal. I just posted yesterday that I wished you were on Cup of Jo more often! I have full lips too, which can be tricky. In fact, we both have almond eyes and dark blonde wavy hair! We don’t look anything alike, but I have found a new love for our similar features because you make them look so nice! My advice, because I wear lipstick all the time, is stick to matte colors. I usually stick to brick red and petal pinks. The new orange colors look nice too, but only if I wear chambray or something equally uncomplicated. <3
