With 6 people in the house, we have to deal with a lot of coats, scarfs, hats, shoes and boots in our tiny little entrance area. It’s so difficult to keep this area in some sort of order! This is how we organise our entrance at the moment (suggestions are welcome of course!):
- A coat rack installed on kid’s height — so they can hang their own coats.
- A second coat rack installed above coat rack number one, with 4 baskets hanging from it. One for each child — for (sun)hats, scarfs, mittens, shinguards, helmets etc.
- Underneath the coats — pull out shoe storage.
- On the wall — chalkboard wall stickers with the children’s sports and music classes
- I keep sunscreen and umbrellas next to the door as well as a mental reminder to bring them if necessary

Gorgeous! What a smart idea! I wish I was this organised!!! Genius!
Brilliant! Love the baskets – such a good idea, we have a panic every morning (esp in winter) rummaging through a pile of mis-matched mittens, hats etc. and they look lovely too
Love your set up!
Wow! This looks great! I’m definitely going to take inspiration from the basket idea. The coat rack in our hall is so chaotic and festooned with hats, gloves sticking up at odd angles, bulky coats etc, I half expect to find a portal to Narnia behind them!
Haha!! 🙂
Wow! So nice and clean. I love how little hands can reach up for those adorable baskets. I can picture colorful children’s artwork hanging above the top hooks. This would add the finishing touch.
I love that idea.
What a timely post! Our entryway is forever a mess and I am hoping now that the kids are back to school I can thin the shoe pile. Right now we have a big tub of kids shoes that they have to fish through. I love the baskets – a fantastic idea. Quick question though….how high did you hang the coats, ie: could an adult sized coat also hang and not drag on the floor?
Hi Christy,
A short jacket could hang there, but opposite we have a little (higher up) coat rack for the grown-up coats… x
What a great idea! I am struggling to also bring some order into our tiny hallway and we’re just three people living at home (me, husband, 17 month old toddler).
Hi Esther
We are very inspired by your suggestion on how to keep the chaos at bay by the front door. Would you mind sharing where I can buy those exact woven hanging bags? I think they are fabulous.
Many thanks
Susana
Hi Susana,
I bought those baskets at Ikea, last year. Not sure if they still sell them?
