My kids and I spent last week at my family’s beach house on Bainbridge Island, just off Seattle. We had friends from Belgium join us, and our six kids ran around from dawn until way after dusk playing on the beach and swimming in the cold water.
When we woke up one morning to blustery weather, we had to be a bit more creative in planning that day’s activities. We ended up organising a big scavenger hunt, and it was so much fun! We wrote up a list of scavenge-able beach items and then we all went out to hunt for the treasures. (We divided up into teams and each team had a grown-up to help read and decipher the list.) It was a perfect cloudy day beach activity, and was actually quite hilarious to look through the contents of the bags when we got back to the house. It’s amazing how many crazy things you can find on a beach!

It’s a great idea! What was the something alive treasure you found? A crab?
Yes! Some kids found crabs, some found bugs, one even found a starfish (we put it back into the water immediately!). xxx
What a fun idea and activity!! xxx
What fun! How nice to be at the beach even on a cold day. Bainbridge Island sounds idyllic. It seems to be popping up in all the books I’m reading at the moment. One beginning with 50… And have you read ‘Poser’ by Claire Dederer? I really enjoyed it. Happy scavenging!
I’ve never read that book, but I’ll def check it out. Thanks!
Bainbridge Island is the most beautiful place. My dream is to live there one day! It’s such a special place to me. xxx
Yes, it is great fun! Had one organised for the first time for a b-day party and it went really well!
I remember making wonderful beach ‘rubbish’ collages with my mum on Fairhaven beach along The Great Ocean Road when I was little, just out of brightly colored plastic and ‘clean’ rubbish washed up on the beach. Really creative and helping to understand why we want to clean up the environment at the same time….thanks for reminding me of them and the chance to now do it with my 2 little boys when we visit Australia from Berlin at Christmas time this year. xx
What a great idea to make ‘rubbish collages’! We’ll definitely do that next time we’re at the beach. Thanks for the tip.
xx

This is great. I have a place at the beach and two small grandchildren. We will definitely be doing a scavenger hunt many times, I bet. thanks!
Fantastic! Kids need these kinds of activities, so much better than been stuck inside playing computer games.
I love this!
what a wonderful post, what a wonderful place (I love Seattle!!). It is amazing how many lovely things you find just looking around!
Looks like you all had great fun! I love the idea of a scavenger hunt on the beach. We did one a couple of weeks ago in the woods whilst camping – it’s amazing what you can find!
