Stone Soup

Stone SoupNow that we have launched our Amazon bookstore, I’ve been constantly wracking my brain for books that we may possibly have forgotten to list. It’s difficult to remember all the great classics that shaped my childhood — there are so many.   Having just flown ‘home’ to Seattle for the holidays, I’ve now had the chance to rediscover the books on my parents’ bookshelves.

Stone Soup is a book that I had forgotten about, but one that certainly deserves attention.  I remember reading this book in elementary school and making ‘stone soup’ in the classroom.  I also remember my mom reading this book to us, and actually trying to make soup out of stones in the back yard!

Stone Soup is an old French tale about three hungry soldiers who come into a town of greedy villagers who are unwilling to share their food with them.  The soldiers convince the villagers to help them make a feast as they share with them the recipe for stone soup. It’s an award-winning classic tale which I was so excited to read to my boys!

How funny! We don’t know this story at all in the Netherlands.
Yet.

We love this story! My daughter’s preschool did a re-enactment and read the story and it was really kind of cute. We also really like the ‘Angus’ books by Marjorie Flack.

Wow! I had forgotten about this book for my little one. My sister and I loved reading it — it’s magical.

I don’t know it and apparently it is a classic French story. Can’t wait to discover it!

We had a “Stone Soup” day at my son’s preschool this year. Every family brought a vegetable and the kids got to make the soup, read the story, then eat the soup with all the parents at the end of class. It was a fun community-building morning and the soup was yummy (secret ingredient: pesto)!

Oh wow… this brings back very foggy memories. I know my parents used to read this to me, but I can’t recall the specifics. Thanks for posting. I’ll have to get a copy.

Christine — I’ve never heard of the Angus books, but they look really cute! I must order a few!
Thanks for the recommendation!
