Create your own Christmas cards

cards typewriterI must say, I don’t send out a lot of Christmas cards. To be honest, I have mixed feelings about the whole Christmas card thing. I do like the personal message, but I hate to think about all the paper and energy that is wasted by this worldwide craze! So, I only send out cards to a few friends abroad, or very close friends here in the country, and that’s it.
I do tend to put some effort into creating the cards though… I like to make it into a little craft project!
This year making the Christmas cards was a true family effort. Even my husband helped!

What we used is:
-One large potato
-Ready made cards,  blanco (folded)
-Red and yellow paint, big brush
-Gold paint, fine brush
-Black permanent marker, fine point
-An old-fashioned type-writer
(I found mine in the attic of my parents-in-law!)

I don’t think I spent more than 15 euros on the materials… Real Credit Crunch Christmas Cards, you could say!

making the cards The fist thing I did is cut the potato in half and carve out two little bird shapes, one slightly bigger than the other one and facing opposite ways. This wasn’t as difficult as I thought it would be!
I also carved out a star from another potato, so my daughter could have a go at stamping as well while my husband stamped the cards. We used a dark orange for the first bird, and a lighter orange for the second one.
We left everything to dry and went to the goat farm in the Amsterdamse bos. (There are new baby goats – so cute! My children just love to give the goats their bottle!)
When we came back, I painted little wings and beaks onto the birds using the gold paint, and gave them an eye with the black permanent marker. When the gold paint was dry, I used the typewriter to write in personal messages… But you might just as well write it in by hand!

P.S. And this is the result:

[…] Try potato stamping – these penguins are so cute! And most probably you will have the materials handy. Or why not create your own Christmas cards? […]
