We are often asked here at Babyccino if we have any advice on flats or hotels in our cities!
I personally prefer staying in flats as opposed to hotels now that we have kids — it gives us more space and freedom. I recently stumbled over this website called VRBO (Vacation Rentals By Owner) whilst looked for a short term rental flat for a friend in Paris and I think it is one of the best websites I have seen. The big advantage is this: the site puts you in direct contact with the owner of the flat so that you don’t need to deal with an agency. This saves you a lot of money in agency fees. It also means that you deal directly with someone who has invested themselves in their flat, mostly meaning you get a better, more personal service. There are a lot of family-friendly flats on the site in central locations, and most of the owners I have been in contact with spoke fluent English.
I have no idea if VRBO works well for other cities, but for finding short term accommodation in Paris, it has been great.
I tried this one before, it is also very good and it is a litile easier to use
It has many locations
Great to know about!
Thank you for this tip! The next time my husband and I are in town I would prefer to rent a flat than stay in a hotel as well.
I will definitely keep this link for trip planning.
I agree 100% that VRBO is one of the best alternatives for finding accomodations for families preferring to stay in places other than hotels. We live in the United States and have used VRBO three times now while vacationing in Hawaii and spots in California. Great experiences all around.
We’ve used this service several times in US (florida and Long Island) for our family with happy results 🙂 Check out the places to stay in NY. I recommended site to my friend who is renting out the ground floor of her townhouse in Murray Hill, NYC. More space and less money than a hotel….plus washer/dryer, kitchen… We’re checking out villa in Caribbean for Spring Break!
This is the service we used for my mom when she came to London after the birth of our first baby. Do you remember? She stayed in a cute little flat on a beautiful street in Kensington. The service was flawless and reliable, and we had absolutely no complaints!

Fully agree with you that vacation rentals by owner are an amazing way to travel. In fact, we love it so much that we are about to launch a website in that space as well! You mention in your post that VRBO is great because you are in direct contact with the owners: on housetrip (our website) each owner will have a profile (like on facebook) because we know how much the profile of the owner is a important criterion in the choice of your accommodation. Another difference is that we handle the payment through HouseTrip – one simply books with his credit card – so it is less risky. We launch the website in September.
