This past weekend was cold and wet, which is probably the worst weather combo ever! It made for a weekend spent mostly inside, which meant my husband and I were forced to be creative to keep our boys entertained.
Making hand puppets turned out to be a brilliant idea, because we spent about an hour immersed in our craft project, and then the boys spent the rest of the afternoon playing with their new ‘toys’. They were totally thrilled!
The puppets are easy to make, and there’s really no rhyme or reason to them so you can’t go wrong. (You can see we were inventive — that hippo looks like a cross between a walrus and a blue dog!) They can be as simple, or as detailed as you make them. All you need is some colored construction paper, a glue stick and scissors.
Just take one full piece of construction paper and fold it into thirds length-wise. Tape the top flap down so paper remains in the folded position (like photo).
Take this paper and fold it in half, and then fold each side back toward the center crease (like photo).
This is essentially the basic mouth of the puppet. You put your hands into the two openings at the ends. From this, you can build onto it. Give your puppet eyes, a tongue, a beak, etc., and be creative!
Fun!

OMG I love these! So much fun!! I will try them very soon!!!
Sooooo adorable and sooo easy too!! This is exactly why you girls should do a craft theme… for people like me that totally forget the simple things, like hand puppets! Thanks!!! My kids will actually be excited to see the rain outside now!
so, so cute! I need to try this!
very cute + handy for a rainy day.
ok, fab, but where on earth did you buy such gorgeous colored construction paper? I haven’t found anything like that in London. In fact I’m terribly frustrated by the quality of art supplies!!! Do tell. And it’s so not fair, you happen to have an art genius in the house!
love them ! Courtney, this is Paul bday today… will your husband create a whole new set for me?!!! take care Marie
I love them! They also seems so easy to make, fun for the whole family!
These are fantastic! I am thinking of making them for my neices and nephews and put them on the top of their Christmas presents…like a bow but still part of their gift!
ME ENCANTA LA IDEA, SEGURO QUE NOS DIVERTIREMOS MUCHO CON L@S NIÑ@S DE LA LUDOTECA. MUCHAS GRACIAS¡¡¡¡¡¡¡

They are really nice!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Congratulatios!
great project….just one thing….folding it 3 times is in quarters, not thirds….will be helpful for those trying to make it, thanks for the picture though, that cleared it up for me.
Jen,
I said, fold the paper in thirds length-wise. Which I think is correct. And then you’re supposed to fold it in half and then again (so that would be in quarters.) Anyway, sorry for the confusion.
AWESOME! The only thing the kids that I work with will have trouble with is coming up with how to decorate them. They lack imagination and I’ve been working with them on that and getting them to use scissors and everything correctly and trying different techniques! (the kids are ages 6-12 it’s sad really) This will be perfect! Made some examples and I had a blast! Great project
It is awesome thanks
