Sharing a room — a girl’s and boy’s side

Sara and Pim have shared a room since Pim was born. I recently asked them if, when we have a bigger house, they would like to have separate rooms or still share. They both said they still would like to share! So sweet. Sara is now 8, and Pim is 6, and I imagine that in a few years they will think differently. But for now, they’re happy together.

They share a fairly big room, and I tried to decorate it to each give them their own ‘identity’ in the room, with a more boyish and a more girly side. The rest of the room is unisex. Checked red and white curtains and a huge wallpaper tree by Inke bring the two sides together and make the room ‘one’.

To give Pim’s side of the room a more boyish appearance, we painted a big blue square above his bed. We put up the beautiful house shelf boxes by Ferm Living to display some of his treasures, and a sweet knitted garland by OeufNYC. On his bed the gorgeous harlequin bedding of Olli Ella, and a personalised pillow from Petiotes. Beauregards the Wolf doll is from BlaBla Kids.

Sara’s side is definitely girly — we bought her antique bed on Ebay and painted it white, and I made her a flowery patchwork quilt myself last winter from a batch of Liberty fabric scraps.

You can find the sweet mushroom nightlight at YadaYada, and the Maileg mice at Sisters Guild.

Pretty soon, Casper is moving in with Ava as well — Ava is looking forward to it!
Do your children share rooms? Did you, as a child? (I’m an only child, so I always had my own room!)

Hi I think it is great when siblings share a room even boy/ girl, my 2 boys share and my little girl has her own room, right now my youngest boy is going through a phase of been scared on his own and has his older brother accompany him around the house, up or downstairs even to the bathroom!! I think if they were not in the same room to sleep this would be an issue for his fear right now.

P.s love your kids room its a great mix, the house boxes are fab and I hope to find a dolls house like Sara’s for my little girl.

Hi Esther,
I think the room is beautiful and it is wonderful that your children want to continue to share. Can I ask where Pim’s bed is from? I have been looking for something similar for my little one who is about to move from a cot to his first bed.

Hi Kate,
Thank you! Pim’s bed is ‘Hemnes’ from Ikea — it easily becomes a double bed as well.

What a precious room. I have a boy and two girls, 4,5 and 7. The girls share a room and my son has his own room, but insists on sleeping with his sisters. His older sister isn’t thrilled with this as he makes noise sucking his thumb, but she puts up with it. I think it’s good for kids to share rooms because it teaches them to be more selfless and generous. Thanks for sharing your kids’ beautiful room!

Oh I love it!!! Love it… light and airy and fun… and not burdened with stuff!!! My kids share… and would not have it any other way… We have a two bedroomed home, they have to share and it really works for us… I would rather have a smaller house and live at the sea than a huge house that we have to clean!!! It works for us,,, And our oldest is sixteen so I can’t see it changing before they start moving out in a couple of years – gasp, terrible thought!!!

I never shared my room with my younger brother but I think I would’ve loved it (till we reach 12 y.o. or so, when everybody needs some privacy). I have three little cousins, all girls (6 y.o. twins and a 5 y.o.) and they have shared room since they were born. Two months ago they moved from a very tiny apartment to a big house with many rooms –one for each girl– but the girls demanded to share one so the parents had to knock down the walls!! This is sweet. I love Sara and Pim’s room decor. And of course all of your post, Babyccino mamas!!

Hi Amanda,
Thank you! For the square, I just went to my local DIY store and had a colour mixed — it’s in between a bleu and green, sorry I can’t be more helpful! x

I love your kids room, it is a great space for everyone to play in together, but also to retire into each individual space. (It also doubles up well as as guest room ;))

I used to share with my brother 15 months of difference. When we where teenagers we moved to a bigger house and we had our own rooms. My brother very often slept in the spare bed in my room. We both loved sharing. I have lots of happy memories from those days. Being naughty, talking, joking & my brother always singing to me.

mine (boy & girl) share a room and we moved her bed right next to his because most nights she was falling off her bed!

Love to read this, I have a 6 year old girl and an almost 4 boy and they share a room… I was wondering for how long will they be ok sharing. Seeing yours I think we have at least a couple more years! Ours isn’t really decorated, though, have to work on that!

Pelham and Pia still share (7 and 5) even though we know have the room for them to have separate rooms. Pia does essentially have a room, although they sleep together in bunk beds in Pelham’s room. For a while they slept apart and it made me so sad. Like you I realise they won’t always want to, but for now I love having them together, Pia was 6 months old when she went in to share with Pelham. Percy is now the only one who doesn’t share although his room is the size of a match box (he just doesn’t know it yet ;-))

Beautifully decorated.
Would you mind sharing where the hanging, yellow light is from?
Many thanks.

Hi Susanne, Thank you!
The yellow light is actually a portable work light, like this one: (The one I have is sold out I think). You can also try your local hardware store for a similar look — like here:

My boys have always shared a room since the younger one was 4 months old. They even share a bed! (They used to have their own beds, but they always ended up climbing in one bed together, so we just gave them one big bed to share.) I think it’s so sweet that they love sharing a bed and bedroom. I love listening to the giggles coming from their room at night time when they know they should be sleeping! And I think it really strengthens their relationship to share that time together.
Marlow and Ivy also now share a room and that is also going well. I can’t wait for Marlow to be bigger so she can sleep in Ivy’s bed with her (and Ivy literally talks about this every night! She can’t wait either!).
p.s. I shared a room with my sister, but I remember wanting my own room when I was roughly 9 years old. So it might not be long before our oldest kids want their own room!

This is a wonderful room!
I’m wondering if you can share the paint color of that blue over the bed. I love it!

20. Esther in Amsterdam | November 11, 2013

Hi Amanda, thank you! For that colour, I just went to our local DIY store and mixed it there — it’s a colour between green and blue — I don’t have a paint number… Sorry I can’t be more helpful! x
