Waterproof camera: a fun gift for kids!

Both of my boys asked for a new camera for their recent birthdays, and I thought it was a nice idea for them to be able to take their own photos — I was actually looking forward to seeing what sort of things they would photograph (I must say, the photos are so funny!).

After a small search on children’s cameras, my husband and I decided to buy them a ‘real’ camera instead of a specific kiddie one. After all, basic cameras are actually pretty affordable nowadays and easy enough for children to use. On top of that, we thought it would be fun to get them waterproof cameras so they could take photos under water (no question that feature would go over well with the boys!). We ended up buying them different cameras only because they had specific colour requests. My oldest wanted a yellow one, so we got him this Kodak EasyShare Sport camera, and my 6-year-old wanted a blue one so we ended up buying him a Nikon COOLPIX S30 (both were around the same price).

The boys brought their cameras with them on a recent holiday and it was really so much fun taking photos under the water!  (The control freak in me was so worried they were going to ruin their cameras in the water, but they worked perfectly!) The cameras are super basic (maybe somewhat clunky), but perfectly fine for little kids. And I love that they’re shock-proof, so no matter how many times they are dropped, they will hopefully still survive.

Such a great idea! We had a waterproof film camera in Spain with us recently and it was so fun to watch films the kids took of themselves in the sea. And, as you say, the waterproof cameras tend to be a lot more hardy than normal cameras.

Brilliant birthday idea, both our boys received them for their b’days this year (6 & 8 as well) and it has been fun seeing their masterpieces.

I love this idea. My 7 and 10 yr old boys have had kiddie cameras and used my canon powershot for trips but I think this would be a great gift for them. Love the photos you posted,I can only imagine how fun their shots would be.

Fun! My kids would love these too. Sara had a camera a while ago, but it was in the beginning of digital photography and the picture quality was really poor. They use our camera now and then, but it would most definitely be a safer idea to buy them their own water and shock proof cameras…!! xxx

I love this idea….we have a Lumix waterproof camera that even does video which is bags of fun in the pool. The issue I have with each kid having their OWN camera….is that it is double the photos going into iphoto and I can barely manage my own! How do you handle downloading their photos?? I think iphoto is a project for retirement!!

My husband brought out the waterproof camera last year at our first memorial day par here on bda. At the pool, it was such a hit with the kids. Seeing their poses underwater was hysterical! Plus, it was so much fun getting all the splashy pictures with the dives, etc. It’s a great summer must have item.

This summer I just bought a waterproof camera for my sons and take him to swimming pool. They enjoy it so much. I think it’s a good gift for summer with price around $80.
