I was chatting with a mum friend recently and somehow we started talking about the movie, My Neighbour Totoro — she had never heard of it before! She went home that day and bought the movie for her girls… (and loved it of course). She later told me that the movie reminds her of one of their favourite books, The Bog Baby — which I had never heard of before. So I went home and ordered the book straight away. (Don’t you love mum chat? We should be talking about the last novel we read or the film we recently saw… and instead we’re sharing our favourite children’s books and movies!)
So… we received The Bog Baby in the post and it has become one of Ivy’s favourite books. And yes, there is something magical and mysterious about the Bog Baby that is very Totoro-like. The story is about two sisters who go fishing in the pond and find something much better than a frog or a newt. They find a magical little Bog Baby, and they decide to take it home and keep it. Don’t you remember being little and thinking you could find a magical creature in the pond? I definitely remember thinking that!
I’m pretty sure my kids now want to go ‘pond dipping’ every time we’re in the park because they too are hoping to find a Bog Baby…
