Making pomanders
December 21, 2011
As a child, my mum and I made pomanders out of oranges and cloves every year for Christmas. I love that smell, so spicy and Christmassy, so last weekend I put my kids to work. It kept them focussed and busy for quite some time! It’s such an easy and lovely project, great for all ages (even 19-month-old Ava liked to participate — pulling the cloves out of the oranges!). There’s nothing more to it than an orange, cloves and a wooden toothpick to make it easier to get the cloves in. You can make patterns or just let the kids go crazy — it won’t affect the scent of the pomanders! When finished, you can tie a ribbon around them and hang them somewhere decorative. Or, give them away as presents!

we also do! is a very beatiful tradition, I started when I was still living by myself and then started involving my daughters. They love it as the result is soon visible and the smell is so Christmassy totally agree with you
merry christmas everybody!!!
Merry Christmas!! xxx
Oh I have fond memories of doing this with my mum too! I’d forgotten all about it.
I have never heard of this before! What a cool project. I love the smell of orange and cloves.
xx
great! for added spicy Christmas scent you can roll them in a bowl of cinnamon, nutmeg, all spice, ect..
I love that thought! Will keep it in mind for next year… xxx
Thanks so much for this post! My kids had friends over today so I had 5 girls (age 3 – 9) sat round the table making these – they all LOVED it, kept them busy for ages and the house smells amazing. I tied them up 4-ways with gold string and tied on a gold bell and left a big loop to hang them up – they looked so cute & got everyone in the festive mood – visitors went home v happy!
What a cute idea to tie a gold bell underneath!! Glad the girls liked the project xxx
