Gooseberry Fool
July 6, 2011
Up until last week, I had no idea what a gooseberry was (are you familiar with them?). They look a bit like a green grape but they’re much more sour. They’re in season right now in England and easy to find at your local fruit stand… so last week my husband and I decided to make Nigel Slater’s Gooseberry Fool (I think Gooseberries are a bit like rhubarb in that you don’t eat them plain — they’re better if they’re cooked in sugar!) Gooseberry Fool is incredibly easy to make and it turned out to be delicious! The tangy taste of the gooseberries is so yummy in the cream, a perfect summer dessert. Here is the recipe. Enjoy!

My nan had the whole garden full of them. I remember picking and eating them straight from the bush. My nan did this wonderfull gooseberry fool – wonderful reminder of my childhood. Thank you!

Goosberries equals childhood. Have you ever tried the red variety? Its veery sweet, and they tend to be bigger too. lovely summer berries!
Marija,
I didn’t even know there was a red variety!! How cool. I want to try them!
P.S. I can’t believe I’ve gone this long without knowing about Gooseberries! It seems so many people have eaten them their whole life!

We had them in our garden as well, when I was child. I remember the thorns! And didn’t really like them that much ‘raw’, but they were lovely in tartes, jams and whatever my mum would make from them!
Oh how I’d love to try that gooseberry fool!
