Art supplies from Ikea

Who knew that a trip to Ikea could be more successful than hitting up your local art supply store?! I had no idea! The MÅLA series of arts and craft supplies is impressive — they have thought of everything: the easel, the paper roll, the paints and brushes, chalk, felt pens, scissors, etc.

We recently got the easel and have already spent hours on it… learning letters and practicing school words, playing games, drawing monsters, painting masterpieces, etc. I’m starting to wonder how we have gone so long without owning one!

I’d be interested to know if the colors are very washable. This is a major selling factor in our house. So far I’ve been paying more for Giotto paints which practically disappear with a baby wipe. But this set is adorable.

Yes, the paints are all watercolour and washable! I also agree that that’s a must when it comes to children’s paints and other craft supplies.

Thanks! I think this is probably one of the nicer better priced sets out there. We have just been using my kitchen wall with chalkboard paint and tape for paper. Also very economical.

We’ve had this Ikea easel for about 2 years and love it. I was going to move it to our garage to make way for Xmas gifts but, my 3 year old’s preschool teacher recently told me it’s great for children who are learning to write to do so on an easel. She said studies have shown writing against gravity is an exellent way to learn. So, another good reason to have an easel!

I’ve picked up the paints before but never saw the easel! Good excuse to go to Ikea… x

I agree ikea is hard to beat when it comes to nice, good and cheap solutions! The paper roll is a brilliant idea! I even like what we call “la bata de picasso”, it’s an artist smock by ikea, just perfect!

Yes, IKEA has very great ideas!!! I wish I had bought the IKEA easel instead of the very expensive I bought from a toys shop!!! the IKEA one has two boards and the size is the very right one for children!!!
Also the paper roll is great, when our kids feel very artistic and create, create, create…

We have had the easel for many years now. Both sides can also be used with magnetic letters, another good way to practice reading and spelling. What I don’t understand is why they put the supplies tray in the white board side. For collecting chalk dust the blackboard side would be more conveniënt.
In school they only have Smart boards, so kids are happy having a blackboard at home.

I love Ikea and shop there regularly. But when it comes to art supplies for children they don’t rate high on my list. I teach young children art classes and have a very good grasp what young children need. I love the easel, have a couple of my own from there. The color pencils are good and a good quality, not sure if non-toxic. Washable paint is important, but not as important then a non-toxic seal on them. I like the the dry cake water color set that’s a plus, non-toxic? not sure. The crayons I would not give to young children, these of course need a non-toxic seal because they go into young months, plus they break quickly. I hand make crayons for young children, colourblocks.com. And I have bought these Ikea paint brushes and they don’t last to long, Not very good for small hands. Ikea’s paint brushes are two long for small hand painting projects. Love the paper rolls. I always have these on hand and it is a great price. Thats my take, Spramani E’Laun from Nature of Art.

@ Saskia
We switched the sides so that the supplies tray is underneath the blackboard. It now holder the chalk and chalkboard eraser. Then my husband got some scrapwood, and fixed it to the bottom of the wood on the white board, he put in 2 screws that just stand proud of the wood. We hung a clear acrylic tray (something like a spice holder) on the screws. It holdss all the paints very neatly and can be removed to wash in case of spills.
