Physique 57 — the workout that actually works

physique57-our-classes-1I wish it wasn’t the case but I don’t like to work out.  I loathe the gym.  The few times I dabbled in Yoga and Pilates I would be all gung-ho for a few months only to eventually find myself watching the clock like a hawk the entire time (is it over now?….now? …what about now?….)

Last winter however, I started taking classes at Physique 57 and everything changed.

Physique 57 has a major cult following in New York.  In a nutshell, it’s 57 minutes of upbeat music and fluid, muscle crunching movements that hone in on all the key areas.  Based on the famous Lotte Berk method, P57 classes focus on core strength and flexibility and the classes are taught by adorable professional dancers who really motivate you to keep going even when your insides are screaming.   What I love about it is that it is comprised of short routines —  every five minutes or so you work on a different part of the body.  And before you know it, the class is over — yay!

They have locations in Soho and Midtown and a great deal of the people I see here are working professionals or moms with young kids.  Too often moms run around like crazy and don’t take time for themselves — P57 is a good one hour break to do something to let you regroup and re-energize.  I would definitely try a class if you can, especially if you are not a “gym” person, like me.

It sounds fantastic; I’m much like you regarding work-outs! The fact that the teachers are all dancers is great — the only classes I like are aerobics and street dancing, because I like the choreographic part of it (makes me forget I’m actually sweating)!
Does everybody really dress alike in black? ;-)

That sounds sooo fun! I can’t wait to try a class when I’m in NYC over the holidays. I’m sure a class will burn at least a couple of cupcakes, right?!

I’m so jealous! I have wanted to take one of those classes for a long time but they haven’t franchised to Orange County, CA yet…i hope they do.

The classes are really great and no worries Esther- you don’t have to wear all black (nor look as graceful as the girls in the picture). I think they just came out with a DVD so you might want to check it out if you are not in NYC.

I am so excited…I just found out that the woman who taught the owner of Physique 57 has her own place called PureBarre and they have locations in Southern California, Colorado, Michigan, Alabama, Tennessee and Kentucky! I am going to try them out this weekend!
